1.0 2019 Brisbane Coastal Carpet Progression
    https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...696505b783.jpg

Hatched 7/12/19 by Michael Pennell (Python in a Pear Tree). Mother was a 2009 clutch mate to Nick Mutton’s breeder females. Father was a 2010 clutch mate to one of Nick’s original breeder males. Pictured in that order below.

(Yet to be named) arrived Tuesday at my FedEx hub for pick up in a poo smeared deli cup deep in shed and actually peeled within an hour of being here. I think he looks a lot like dad. 51grams on arrival. Got some growing to do but not intending to push him for huge adult size.

He was perched up last night in ambush position so offered his first meal here a little earlier than I normally would and he took a rat pink without hesitation.

Already contending for most arboreal animal here.

That makes two. I think more Brisbane locality coastals could be created from that young pair.

    Exciting stuff!

Two meals down the hatch and doing well at a week and a half here. Gets up in the perches every night like clockwork and stalks the floor of the tub. Had one more short handling session while changing paper towels the other day. Very calm and curious little guy. Possibly considering Willard Bruce as a name. Not settled on it quite yet though.

What a cool variation in coloring and pattern from the female's look.

This guy looks like something in between the rock and your female Brisy.

From afar he has a lot of contrast and appears to have some yellows.

Some of Jewel's littermates looked like that in certain ways.

I'm really liking the fact he's active and perching a lot. Jewel still perches but she's a pretty mellow ground dweller now.

Nick and Justin's book, seems to indicate the males tend to climb more and have a wider territory range than the females.

    You've got another smoker there!

Yep! His overall pattern is more banded like my rockhampton but his coloration leans more toward my female Brisbane. I like his more defined head pattern too. If you look closely at the females head you can see the same pattern but it’s just a little less outlined and smudged.

His markings do appear much more yellow/khaki/gold than the female and the darker outlines bordering them are thinner than hers as well.

The background color on either of them is tricky for me to correctly describe though given my colorblindness. I know it’s brownish but depending on the lighting it can seem to have some redness to it as well. Also maybe some grey greenish color closer to the belly on both of them.

I’ll defer to those without chromatic perceptual deficiencies to weigh in.

I forgot I fed him on the 5th. He needs more time between feeding and handling.

Thanks dude! Sounds like Kevin is getting a bit greedy with the relative increase of portion and frequency, yeah? This guy is jumpy and hissy right out of the tub but still has only offered a couple shots at my phone. Still really hard to capture his colors. He’s overall kind of light compared to Charlotte but lots of the pictures come out way darker it seems.

Not much to update, but Charlotte Marie’s 2nd hatch day is tomorrow and she’s doing very well. On to large mice now and probably a bit more of a growth spurt soonish. She’s about the size of most other folks yearling Morelia on here but she’ll catch up in time, no rush.

Thanks Ziggy! She’d been on rat fuzzies for a bit and figured I let her clean up the mice leftover from the boas.
My current small rats are on the more generous side of small and easily weigh half or more what she does. I know you can push the envelope a bit with carpets but I’m not pressing for enormous growth or huge meals.
If she’s 4-5yrs old before she looks to be a breedable size that’s fine with me. May break out rat pups for her sooner than later though. She’s done some decent growing in her 4 months with me. Came in from nick weighing 92grams and she’s probably 130grams+ now.

Hah! No worries brother. I’m also tiny (5’4”) so my figure makes my critters look much larger. She’s also incredibly difficult to photograph so there’s always some amount of forced perspective that makes her appear bigger.

DOH! Additionally just recognized that I posted in the wrong Brisbane thread... planning for teaching the most logistically difficult fall semester ever has got my head in some strange places

Alright, back to the animal this thread pertains to. No real updates per se. Eats anything offered to him, calm as can be when handling, stalks the floor of his tub from up in his perches every night. You’re a damn cool carpet, Willard.

Thanks Ziggy! I really dig it too. If you scroll back and look at Charli Mae’s head stamp you can kind of see this same pattern, just a little smudged looking. Interesting to see the similarities and differences between animals in this locality/bloodline.

Thanks Dave! He’s grown a little bit in the last several weeks and I imagine he’ll develop some more contrast as he gets some size. Definitely more khaki/yellow than Charlotte but I feel like I see some similarities in their burnt sienna reddish brown background colors. But that’s coming from a colorblind guy.

Second shed in the books here but first full shed cycle (he shed within an hour of arriving). Just weighed in at 73grams. Little dude but has increased by ~43% in body mass.
Probably the easiest to handle of al three carpets I keep. Chill, inquisitive, active, awesome. Keep it up, Willard Bruce!

LOL - the phone. Yeah, the phones give off heat, which could be part of it, although Yafe could care less.

Yeah, I guess I lucked out with Yafe, no strikes at me or phones, etc. Just rats. Seems many young carpets live up to the reputation that they can be nippy. Of course, most of those same carpet's are totally docile when adults.

When I bought Yafe, I specifically asked who the calmest snakes the breeder had were and Yafe had a great rep. I was really lucky he stayed calm through all the RI treatment after he got lost by fedex. To this day, he will occasionally hiss when getting picked up or woken up, but otherwise, is a docile as can be.

EDIT: You said it though - confidence is key. They really get pretty calm once they realize they have some size to them. Yafe has gotten easier to handle and more confident with size as well.

He's looking fantastic!!! Gotta love when they are that chill that young, it seems ahead of the curve a bit.
Fernie (Bredli) turned that corner very quickly as well. Cornell (JCP) is getting there, he's far more relaxed...but will still take a pop at my phone!! Or my thumb while I'm typing or scrolling, hahaha.

Couldn’t agree more. Color, pattern, personality, etc is all distinctly different between all three of my coastals. Very curious to see what the Brisbanes will hopefully produce color and pattern wise down the road.

Oh yeah! This one is easily the most boldly confident of the three morelia here. Comes right out of the tub to investigate whatever is going on anytime I go in there. Once he’s hooked and in hand he’s calm as can be too.

He’ll be in this smaller tub until he’s probably over 100grams or more. He’d be fine in the next larger tub, but this will be nice to have an empty prepped tub next to him. Can just put him in a clean tub when he makes a mess and then clean his dirty tub in the meantime.

I think the males tend to be a bit more busy and arboreal in my limited experience.

I did see a study, or maybe it was in The Mutton/Julander book that made mention of males being found in the canopy more often and having a somewhat larger range which makes sense.

I have only seen Kevin in a ground hide once and a few times on top of a hide. He's been perched 98% of the time, so I'll be curious to see a comparison between your Brisy pair.

My female coastal has opted for the floor of the cage in the last few years and rarely perches at least when I'm awake. I think she may climb at night, and I think the Bredli cruises the floor at night.

You are in a good position to study the male/female differences since your pair are close in age and size.

Of course we haven't mentioned "The Rock" here, but that's another subject!!
