How long can you leave stuck shed?

So I woke up on sunday, and Vincent had shed! Almost a full shed, just a little tiny bit on the end of his tail and the back of his head.

I fed him last night, I can wait a few days and soak him right? Or you think I should just wait until the next shed?

I didn't think there was a "time limit", just didn't want to do anything to hurt my snake.

Edit: That sounded kinda rude. While I did mean after the initial digestion period, I wasn't sure if I should soak him or wait it out. So for real, thanks for the answer.

Technically a few pieces of stuck shed won't hurt him at all. Unless of course its in a ring around him....You can just leave him until his next shed, up the humidity and it will all come off with the new shed.

And of course what Charlie meant was that if the shed is in a ring around his tail tip, you need to soak him to get it off or risk having the shed skin dry and cut off circulation to the tail tip- leading to all sorts of problems that you don't want for your snake. You don't want the vet bills either! :gj:

Yup, I believe you explained it better!

That's exactly what he has. After the 48 hour food period I'll clean it off asap.

I've heard putting your snake in a warm damp pillow case will help out. I may try that if soaking/wiping doesn't work.

There is a geat sticky in the husbandry section that shows how to get off stuck shed. Just give him a warm soak then let him crawl through a damp towel while holding both him and the towel. Im sure it will come off for you;) check out the sticky

Yeah, I could do that. But I don't like using tried and true methods. I like to make up my own stuff.

I never soak my BPs, since it isn't a natural thing for them to do in the wild. I can guarantee that the damp pillowcase, with a washrag or small damp towel thrown in with the snake, will take care of the problem in no time.

I've always been one to take care of stuck sheds first thing as soon as I notice it. It's easy enough to get a pillowcase wet and throw them inside it and then back in their tub/cage for an hour or so. When you take them out, if the shed isn't gone it will be very easy to remove.

I should have done it when I first noticed, but I was so excited he did shed I wasn't thinking.

Hmmm, I'm not certain this can be said with this much certainty. There are places in Africa where royal pythons live in mangroves and mangroves grow in swamps. I keep reading research papers to increase my own knowledge and am amazed at the diversity of these snakes and their adaptability as well.

For problem sheds I took a spare towel and hand stitched it into a small bag; then I take the snake and a small wash cloth and throw them in a small amount of water for 20 minutes and that usually does the job.

I would say that sometimes putting a damp pillowcase right in the enclosure is not an option (as in my case). I use scott shop towels as substrate so when they get wet, they stay wet. I change them often but I don't see what is wrong with either soaking in a separate tub or putting a damp cloth in with the bp in a separate tub. What ever works for each individual I guess, as long as the bp is kept warm and the stuck shed is tended to.

I still want to know about these pillow cases in the wild. :D
