Tell Grandma she will fall in love, just like she did with your snakes, lol. Their eggs are the best! And they are so much fun to watch with their goofy personalities!

We do! Our flock currently consists of Speckled Sussex, Salmon Faverolles, Barnevelders, Easter Eggers, Barred Hollands, Australorps, Delawares, buff-laced Polish crested, several varieties of Cochins, silver & gold laced Sebrights, and dark Brahmas, as well as a few "chicken yard mixes" of the above. We absolutely love fresh eggs, and the occasional extra roosters make *great* dog food (or supper for us, depending on what's already in the freezers). ;)

    3 of our 4 roos:

Pretty roo's. We don't have any roo's. I want a frizzle cuz their so goofy cute looking, but they only sell them straight run at my feed stores. Don't think my neighbors would appreciate a roo if I wound up with one, lol. Oh, almost forgot my Cuckoo Maran. Apparently I have no pics of her on my phone either. :(

They really are!! And you wouldn't even believe how much brighter and almost orange yolks are, as well as how hard their shells are.

We have eyeballed silkies before too. We are limited on space though, and I really wanted the Sussex. Also, gotta love the green eggs, we have to have our Ameraucana. They don't seek to be as hardy as the other breeds though. Our first year with chickens, we lost one as a youngster to who knows what. Then last year we lost one to a bad prolapse. It was so bad I couldn't fix it and we had to out her down. :( About chicks in general when we first got them, they told us if you want 12, buy 14 because your going to lose some. Other than the ameraucana, everything else has made it just fine. Have abhor you given yours pumpkin guts? My girls favorite things are grapes, pumpkin guts, and watermelon.

They love overripe tomatoes, too, Doolittle! I have an adult Plymouth Rock hen and silver laced Wyandotte hen, and just picked up some new chicks on Saturday: Aracauna, Black Star, and Buff Orpington! I had a couple more hens but the neighbor's feral cats got them in November. :(

We want chickens! In minneapolis we've gotta get annual permission from neighbors within 100ft and we could have some, no roosters allowed.

Once we have our own place.. :D

We're also trying to convince her parents to move to their weekend place full time (where we have 120 acres of woodland, a large garden, and plenty of space for farm animals) for the summer and raise some poultry.

    I've got chickens! :)

Speckled Sussex, Golden-laced Wyandotte, Silver-laced Wyandotte, Columbian Wyandotte, Buff Silky Bantam, and Americauna/Maran cross (2 blacks and a blue).

Not actually supposed to have a rooster, but my neighbors haven't complained.

I'll notice a chicken in the backyard. My mom had a chicken when she was young. Her mother killed it and cook it in chicken soup and feed it to my mom. My mom was devastated from that she never let us have chickens. And I guess my mind set is still like that. I don't mind a chicken. They are cute. I just don't want to wake up and find our pet chicken kill and served to me I guess.

The only meat breeds I know are the game hens. We had one once, a Dark Cornish.

Egyptian fayoumis chickens lay craploads of eggs lol. They are also very slim, lightweight chickens. They don't eat a whole ton either. They're great free-range chickens, and they specialize in bug-eating lol.

Bad thing about the Egyptian ones, is they only sell them straight run. Here at least. Hubby wanted one of those, but we can't have a noisy roo here, so we passed. Didn't want to chance getting a darn roo.

At present we've got 6 dark cornish and 8 austra-whites. I also had two broad brested bronze turkey poults until today - I found one dead an hour ago and now the other one won't shut up! No idea what happened, it was healthy for the first four days that I had it. I'll be hitting up Big R tomorrow to see if they still have any or if they've sold them and gotten some new ones.

The only meat birds we use are Cornish cross birds. And I should of been more specific that I was talking about egg layers.

I really would like some wyandottes especially gold or silver laced. And I've never seen a blue laced red so one of those would be cool too. I just really want something unusual that can produce an average amount of eggs. I have hybrids that pop out eggs like a gum ball machine.

Dark Cornish are most definitely for the dinner table! I picked up two more poults today along with two pullets that I am thinking are a buff cochin and 4 straight run birds that look like they'll be super tiny. They are smaller than the two day old poults and they already have fully feathered wings, and they looked cool, so I bought some! LOL I'll get some pics up at some point!
