snake wandering in cage

My BP is roaming around his enclosure this morning. He has not done this since I first got him on April 14th. He has his head near the top like he is wanting to get out. Is this normal behavior? I have checked the temperatures and the humidity and everything is right where it should be. Is this cause for concern?

Your snake is probably feeling mroe comfortable in his new surroundings and is venturing out a bit more to explore his digs. Unless he's banging his head or rubbing his nose raw trying to get the lid off, he should be fine. Stimpy loves to cruise his compound whenever he gets the chance and it's fun watching him explore everything.
Just keep an eye on him and make sure he isn't hurting himself trying to get out. ;)

People routinely ask for help and give little to know real information. The definition of whats fine for temps and humidity is not even a universally agreed upon number. Nor should it be with each animal being different. Please give us the following info or as much as you can.

What do you use to heat your cage?
What do you use to regulate the heat of your cage?
What is your ambient temperature in the cage?
What is the temp under your warm hide?
What is the temp under your cool hide?
What is your humidity?
When did your animal last eat?
What was the species, size, and condition of the food item (e.g. mouse, 22grams, frozen thawed or rat, weanling, live)?
What is the weight of your snake?
How often do you handle the snake?
What kind of substrate is your snake kept on?

Can you post a picture of your setup?

Not all of those questions need to be answered but they each can help for the forum to get a good picture of what your snakes life is like. It would be irresponsible to say, oh your snake is just exploring, or oh your snake is hungry until we have more info.

I wouldn't be to worried. Probably just getting use to things. I have some shy ones come out to play during rodent cage cleaning days, or if I open a window and they smell the nice fresh outside air, or during seasonal changes. Enjoy the chance to view your baby!

The person stated his settings are good for his pet. Now, common sense being the dictating factor, if the temps and humidity weren't right, his snake would have been behaving like this long before now.
Nothing in his post indicated anything had changed in the snake's environment. It's just as irresponsible to jump to a conclusion that something might be wrong with this pet just because he's out exploring his surroundings.:colbert:
Now, if he said his snake hasn't been feeding, or gave other indications that something in his routine or surroundings had changed, THEN we might want to delve a bit deeper.
Unless there is an obvious behavioral change after having the pet for SUBSTANTIAL amount of time, or if there is an injury or illness associated with the pet's behavior, posting all of this information seems to be overkill.
Temps and humidity might be good to post, but from the sounds of it, having his snake only since last month, it sounds like he's just getting acclimated to his new surroundings and scoping things out. Of course I don't have a degree in python biology 101 either. :rolleyes:

I can answer some of your questions. The snake is housed in a 20 gallon long tank. His last recorded weight was 207.5 grams. The last time I fed him was on May 1st. He ate a live rat fuzzy. The temperature on the warm side is 92 and the cool side is 80. I have two identical hides, one on the warm side and one on the cool side. I measure the temps with an accurite thermometer/hygrometer. The humidity is at 50%. I am heating the cage with a UTH. The top of the cage is covered with aluminum foil to help with humidity. I only handle the snake once a week or when I have to do spot cleaning or a complete cage cleaning. The substrate I am using is coco fiber. I do not have access to a camera right now or I would post a pic, sorry about that. I have a water bowl in the middle of the cage. I am seriously thinking about investing in a temp gun. I hope this information helps a little bit. I have some fake vines hanging in the cage to help clutter it a bit. I forgot to mention that I have two accurites, one on the warm side and one on the cool side. The probes are placed under the substrate. If I am doing something incorrectly please let me know. I want to do everything properly for my snake.

I forgot to add that the UTH is controlled by a thermostat, sorry.

He is hungry. Mine always cruise when they are hungry.

Your husbandry sounds great. I wouldn't worry too much, as long as he's not scratching himself. Out of my three, I have one that likes to cruise around. He also might be hungry. Mine are on a five day schedule, but it's probably not good to change yours until a few consistant feedings.

The OP states that he has had the snake since April 14th. Its now May 6th. He has not had the snake long enough for a baseline to be established.

I completely agree. Thats why I did not suggest that there was anything wrong with his snake or his husbandry.

The vast majority of people who keep snakes have something wrong with their husbandry. The fact that the OP is asking the question tells us that even the OP thinks there might be something wrong. I am assuming that the OP wanted a serious response to the question posted and for that we need details. Again the snake is new as of April 14th so there has not been a SUBSTANTIAL amount of time to develop a baseline behavior for this snake.

It sounds to me like your setup is perfect. Your snake is most likely just checking things out or as Kaorte stated your snake could be hungry. Its been five days now so if you have another food item today might be a good day to feed. Try and get a camera because from the sounds of it your setup is perfect. Its always good to see a proper setup. The reason I asked for all the detail is because I know how you feel. I am a very nervous animal keeper and I go over my husbandry constantly. Now that you have given all the details you are going to get some congratulations or even better some very specific tips.
