F/T question

what do you do when a F/T mice/rats get ripped open during feeding? i had this happen but couldnt get the rat away from him. Hes not constricting it to cause it to come open.

It won't hurt your snake to eat a rat/mouse that has busted open -- a little gross for you but the snake don't care.

You might want to re-think either your f/t supplier or your defrost / heating technique. As either your feeders are not fresh or you are cooking them too much. :gj:

Ewww I can't even imagine that! I haven't had that happen to me yet, I've had some that had patches of skin fall off and you could like see their insides moving around under it and I was always afraid they would bust open because I have heard stories of other people having that happen.

I'm sure its not bad for them, it would end up opening inside of the snake once it started to digest anyways. Probably just a really creepy mess to clean up. Maybe try switching out the water faster to heat it up faster (I'm guessing if the rat/mouse is left in the water for a long time they will be more likely to burst). You could probably also try thawing them out in ziplock bags, that way they don't directly touch the water. I think that would take a much longer time though.

thats happened to me quite a bit.

and its no big deal...
just pushing all the insides to one end till it pops...

I feed F/T all the time and that doesn't happen to me - you really need to change the way you defrost as it sounds like you are partly cooking the mouse/ rat.

Well if it makes a horrible mess then it might mean having to decide between letting the snake lie among rotting mouse gut soaked bedding for 48 hours or moving it within 48 hours of eating. Neither one is something I'd exactly choose if I could avoid it. :snake:

Some snakes won't eat them but it sounds as though yours is fine with it - oh and it also means re-freezing is a definate no-no.

Cooked and weakened mouse belly + refreeze and defrost a second time = mouse grenade when you try to pick it up. :puke2:

There are probably other reasons but those are the ones that spring to mind just now.

to defrost them i just lay them out that let the thaw...then put thm in a bag and put it in hot water to raise the temp so he will take it

thats proabaly the problem.. the water shouldnt be boiling hot but warm

my water in our house is really hot...

not boiling...
