Ahaetulla Nasuta

Hey all, not sure if there are any other vine snake keepers here, but wanted to show you this guy and his progress since I picked him up. A bit of backstory, I saw him at a pet store in Portland and at the Portland reptile expo but wasn't sure I was ready for a lizard eater and all the things vine snakes need..

I went back to the store a few months later and he was still there but not looking as good. The white and black skin was showing, his head was brown, and he had bumps on him. I took him to the vet for the store and while they had wormed him when he arrived with panacur, he had parasitic worms under the skin, so they anesthetized him and removed the parasites and gave him fluids.

About two weeks later after bringing him home, he is looking 1000% better. Eating, drinks right from my hand, super calm and seems tame. He is only 16 grams so I thing he was imported young and lived in the store with lots of traffic, people, and lights. Hopefully he will continue to thrive in my care and will be with us for a long time. Below are some pictures of him along the way, and his enclosure. I don't see any photos! But I'm super excited to see your new pickup. Vine snakes are so cool looking.

And they can be a challenge to get beyond the health issues they're imported with, especially if their care is delayed. :gj: I look forward to visible photos

Woops! Let's try again. Some enclosure specs: in planted terrarium with screen top and basking spot of 95, fogger to keep humidity at ~70% and sprayed 1x or 2x daily. Gut loaded brown anoles and house geckos available to eat. UV bulb and day/night cycle. If I can figure out how to get a video posted, I'll show his drinking :) The type of parasites found were from eating inverts before being caught and imported.

He is looking way better now!!

I don't have one but have thought about getting a vine snake for a couple years. Just not sure about a lizard eater. I did recently buy a small group of Mourning geckos that just started laying eggs. Figure if they get producing like crazy and seem able to maintain while feeding a snake, I will definitely revisit the idea.

Thank you Richard, I'm really happy with how he is doing. I purchased the enclosure he was living in to avoid the stress of switching to a near terrarium and setup and I'm completely speculating that it made a huge difference, but that makes sense to me. I was concerned that anesthesia, surgery AND a new enclosure in a different space would be too much stress. He didn't eat for a few weeks and I was concerned but now see he was just recovering from surgery/dehydration and going into/through shed.

Yeah, that's a good idea. I think even with them laying eggs there would still need to be a feeder source available because they can incubate for a long time and these guys have a pretty fast metabolism, reportedly needing up to 3 appropriately sized meals a week. He will have a relatively big lump from a lizard that is smoothed out about 36 hours later, pretty amazing.

Here is an updated photo from today, he took his 3rd meal. He has eaten one mourning gecko, one house gecko, and one brown anole at this point. Kinda brutal to see him put down animals that are still kicking but he is an amazing snake, and such is life.
