California Red-sided Garter pick up
Well, just received two California Red-sided Garters in a trade for some caging. My wife pointed this species out to me while we were dating so I agreed to let us have the pair. Not much else to say - just some quick cell snaps before they went into QT.

Welcome to the club! One of the most prolific garter species to own and to breed. Also one the most sought after species as well. I have a pair also. Can't wait until they get some size on them. :salute:

They are beautiful. Absolutely the coolest looking of the Garter Snakes.
Am I mistaken or were these once considered a threatened species? I remember when I was a kid back in the very early 70's I would go to 7/11 which is a convenience store in the Midwest. The sold Slurpies (slush drinks) and the plastic cups were all endangered species. I could have sworn the red sided garter was on one of the cups.

Boy taking his nice and slow.
Thanks for all the comments. Under my understanding they are considered a threatened species in the state of California if I am not mistaken.
My wife is really excited about this pair. Not for breeding them but just for having the my of raising them and using them in future education shows.

No, not the California. Red sided. The threatened and protected garter is the San Francisco garter (thamnophis sirtalis tetratenia) and still is. They do look similar in coloration but the S.F. garter can have more definitive and vivid colors depending on locale. They are still protected but there is a big problem now with people collecting them from the wild despite their status under federal laws.
