Bad start to a new year.......
I will start off with saying that my wife and I are use to our animals passing away. Don't take that the wrong way, most of what we have had have been older animals that the past owners didn't want and we don't know the history of them. We both take pride in knowing that we gave them the best and most spoiled golden years they could have ever had.
Nine months ago we decided that we wanted to try our hand at chickens. For those of you that are on my facebook page you know we have a whole petting zoo here in the small city of San Antonio Texas. Well we got a mix or 2 Ameraucana and 6 Barred Rocks. Well there were 4 roosters in the Barred Rock group and I went and worked a deal with the guy we got them from to trade out 3 roosters for a couple of older hens after all of our birds hit 6 months old. This left us with 5 hens and we kept the biggest roo for a total of 6 in our flock which is one over the city limit of 5.
Well yesterday I came home for lunch and found BigBoy dead in the run. It bothered me a little because he was fine when I checked on them at 6am. What bothered me more was that I was going to have to call my wife and tell her. He was her pick when we got them, they were about 6 days old so she was really attached to them and him the most.
I didn't even want to come home from work last night because I didn't want to see the look on her face and the hurt in her eyes.
It was surreal this morning not hearing him crow at 4:30am like I have gotten use to.
    He will be missed........................

This was a couple days after we got them

This picture was actually taken last weekend of BigBoy and I (he really was a big boy, I'm 6 foot 225 pound)

Oh I'm so sorry :( I've never raised chicken but I've worked with them a lot, I helped some of my friends with there chicken coops and you really do bond with them. I love chickens. I'm so sorry about his passing, he was a very handsome boy.

I'm so sorry. Chickens and their personalities really have a way of working into your heart. They are so goofy. I remember coming home from work one day and finding my daughters favorite chicken dead. I know the dread you felt. So sorry for your loss. He really was big too! And gorgeous.

Even when your used to animals passing, you don't get used to the sting it causes.
