Quick question that been driving me nuts

basiclly i just want to know, when people on forums talk about the morph combination do they put the female or males first? for example when i read mojave x lesser does that mean the mojave is a female and the lesser is a male or is it the other way round. thank you very much for any help!

Males first, then females and if there's a third number the gender is unknown.

1.0 male
0.1 female
0.0.1 no idea

1.2 1 male 2 females

That's not what they were asking.

They want to know if there is a standard order when talking about pairing different ball python morphs for breeding. Like they used a Mojave paired with a lesser, is the Mojave a male and the lesser a female. The Mojave is a female and the lesser is a male or it doesn't matter and the order of the names does not represent the sex of the morphs used, just the morphs used alone.

I honestly don't know and have never thought about it. I'm not big into following all the different morphs.

I agree with KMG, I believe they were asking when someone states "Mojave x lesser" what is the normal order of sexes.

Personally, I always use Sire x Dam. Not sure if this is the correct way, but it feels right and how I tend to interpret the pairings. Maybe it's because of the 1.0 / 0.1 order that this seems right to me?? Who knows. Maybe someone with more pedigree / breeding experience can chime in.

Sire x dam is uses for dogs, cats, horses, etc. why not snakes?

Well, dopey me, I totally misread that the first time. As for the rest, I'm not sure there is an established protocol.

i think some people care while other people mix it up.


if you breed mojave male to lesser female or mojave female to lesser male, the clutch will be the same, with the same odds.

i can only think of two exceptions: desert, where the female is infertile. And banana / coral glow, because its sitting on the sex-determining chromosome pair.

male coral glow to regular female: all male offspring will be het coral glow, all female offspring would be visible coral glow.
male normal to female coral glow: all male offspring will be het coral glow, all females will be normals.
male het coral glow to regular female: the males will be 50% het coral glow, half of the females will be regulars and half of the females will be visible coral glow.

here the females need the gene only once to be visible coral glows, normal-looking female het coral glow doesnt exist, homozygous female coral glow doesnt exist.

but apart from that, i think too many people mix it up and write female x male instead, so i wouldnt rely on it.

It really doesn't matter how it's put the snake which is the subject/topic is usually put first.
