I almost ran out of breath reading that without any punctuation, but I would say 3in should be good. I would think 11in would cover too much surface but I'm not positive.

All of our PVC baby racks have 11 inch back heat. I prefer it in 6 qt tubs because it provides a better temperature gradient than belly heat in the small tubs, IMHO.

Don are your baby racks enclosed?

The sets with back heat are. They are Reptile Basic's 16 tub racks with 6 qt tubs. I built casters for them, but other than that, are factory stock racks.

I would personally use 3 or 4 inch belly heat. I have 3" on my melamine hatchling rack I built and it gives a nice gradient. Good luck, I'd love to see pictures when it is completed!

Re: shoe box rack help?
i was kinda thinking because ,i keep my house so cool its around 73 to 78o in my house ,so they will be soulheated by flexwatt no ambaient heat what so ever.I have done spec and measureing since i started this tread and if i do a foot on each shelf there is like 1/3 of no flexwatt on the tubs for a cool zone .Still open to any more helpfull ideas thou.I did a rough measure of the 3in flexwatt and it would only cover 1/4 of the tubes .Plus i have a temp controller ....wil take pick tommrow after reptile show im going too ...early christmas lol

Since flex watt does nothing for ambient temps it wouldn't matter back or belly. I use heat cable routered into my baby rack
