breeding weight

my female is 1400g is this too small to breed:please:

since there is a couple months til breeding season starts you can feed her as I suggested before, but put her on a 5 day feed schedule. You want her to be at least 1600g

A lot of people breed at 1200 successfully.

If you want her to reach a better weight feed her smaller meals more often, not larger meals less often ;)
That's my approach to feeding up females and it worked wonders this past season.

I talked to a breeder at the expo in PA this weekend who said he breeds girls as small as 1000g successfully. I wouldn't recommend it as I've always seen 1500g as the generally accepted breeding weight, but it's possible to breed smaller than that.

Agree...that first large rat you get her to take may put her off feed for the rest of the year...:rage: I've tried bumping up prey size in the past and it always seems to backfire...

Right now since im getting females ready they are eating weaned/sm rats every 3 days to pack on weight for the breeding season.


As for breeding, theres no right way or wrong way when it coems to weight. Females of any age and size can have egg complications no matter what. Saying a female that is 1200g is more likely to get egg bound over a 3000g female is absurd.

Egg binding usually is the cause of bad genetics and or poor health from being power fed or under fed and not having the ability to push the eggs out.

I start ALL my females first pairings at 1200g. By time the winter goes on and eat eat eat eat and follicles grow their 1500-1800 right before ovulation.

I also have a 5 year old female who was a mouser her first 4 years which stunted her growth. She now eats rats but peaks at 1400g.

This is mostly your decision on what YOU think is right for YOU to do with YOUR snakes. Were here only to give information and your to fine tune it.

I couldn't agree more I feed small rats every four days to my girls and they are packing on grams nicely. :)

There is just more than weight to take in consideration there is also age for example while I would breed a 3 or 4 year old that is 1200 grams maybe even less, I would not breed a snake that is 1500 grams or more if it is under 18 months.
