Unprinted newspaper for me. My hatchlings/juveniles are living poop machines and I like how quick and easy the tubs can be cleaned when using paper. The down side is that it holds in moisture and saturates the poop if not cleaned up immediately. Wet snake poop smells FOUL.

I use Aspen.. easy, cheap and doesn't mold. Anything ment to hold moisture will also hold mold and spores....... Ever look over at yout tank and see a mushroom growing??

That's fine, so long as you don't keep it too wet. There are easier substrates to deal with, though. I used eco earth with my first ball python....and after just a couple months, I was ready to throw the stuff away. I use newsprint now, and wouldn't want anything else.

We used cypress mulch in a burmese enclosure...never saw mold or mushrooms. But, I suppose if one never cleaned it properly or changed it, anything is possible. ;)
