Poor Cherry :(

My mother in law has a mastiff (was going to be the girlfriend to my boy). A month ago her eye became swollen and irritated so we brought her to the vet. They said it's congunctivitis and gave us medication for it. After we ran the course of medication and it didn't improve we brought her back in and they said "well lets do an exploratory surgery, maybe a suture broke from her cherry eye surgery." So we did that. They couldn't find anything in her eye so they took samples of the tissue, we had them sent in because they said "we will be able to give a definite diagnosis if you send the samples out." The results came back a week later, and all they could tell us was that "it was foreign body related inflammation." They gave us an anti-inflammatory and told us to come back in a week. So we did and saw no improvements. We did our research and suggested that maybe there was an abscess behind her eye. Today, they took her into surgery to drain the abscess. They said they didn't get much but "it's still possible that's what it is. Or it could be a tumor." Her eye is protruding, and about ten times more swollen and gross than before the second surgery. The glands on her neck were swollen this whole time and now the ones by her chest are swollen. They've done a full blood work up and found nothing. They found nothing in her blood suggesting cancer, infections, or diseases. WHAT ELSE COULD IT BE?


We are at loss and most likely are going to have to euthanize her. We just can't justify leaving her in pain just because we don't want to lose our beloved girl.

Did they say anything about removing the eye?
My old beagle had small tumors in the eye and they removed it. He was in a lot of pain also and when they removed the eye he was good as new..

See another vet!! before you put her down, see another vet, there are vets who specialize in eye problems, we have one here in our town. even if you can't find an eye vet, get another opinion. I agree, removing her eye sounds bad, but it is better than putting her down if that will correct the problem. Prayers are with her and with you guys!

Definately see a veterinary opthamologist. I know you've probably spent a fortune already, but if anyone is going to figure out what's going on, it's them.

Well today we brought Cherry in for a second opinion since the meds didn't seem to be working. She was very weak this morning so we decided it wasn't okay to wait until Friday for the appointment with the opthamologist. WELL, the vet removed a tooth because is was rotten (on a less than a year old dog) and lo and behold there was a tumor in the roots of the teeth. The infection caused a sinus infection which led to build up in the eye cavity.


Here's the kicker. The other vet, who gave us no answers, also did a "complementary" teeth cleaning. Apparently they didn't think it was odd that such a young dog would have a rotting tooth and didn't think it was necessary to mention it to us. So now our dog has been through three surgeries, lost almost ten pounds, and was almost put to sleep because the other vet failed to mention that crucial detail to us.

Wow!!, well I'm glad you found the cause, and she will be getting better, I would refuse payment of the pther surgeries, or ask for reimbursement of some kind, but then again you probably won't be taking Cherry back to that vet.

We will be hiring a lawyer, absolutely. It's not like the new vet was searching for anything, the tumor was in plain sight on BOTH sides of the tooth and they were apparently too incompetent to notice. Even if they didn't do the plaque scraping and just didn't remove it from the receipt, they were doing a surgery where they had to make an incision in her gum line, HOW COULD THEY HAVE MISSED IT?!

negligence, plain and simple......a lawyer is a great idea.

Wow glad that she is ok and it worked out. She will heal up fast
