My First DUMBOS!!!! Need to pick someones brains also
So I picked up the hairless dumbo from a source that will remain unnamed :) and the standard happened to be at a pet store several hours from our place. I about screamed when I saw the pet store had a dumbo dalmatian!!! Or variegated, whatever you want to call it, I like dalmatian better :P Dalmatian is my absolute most favorite marking!
Also, these are my first pet rats in over 2 years. That was when my first pet rat died and I was so heart broken I couldn't stand the thought of loving another rat that would die in 2 or 3 years. But, these cuties stole my heart, mostly the one with hair because he's a sweat heart!!
So anyway. I was hoping to get a female dumbo, but that didn't happen obviously. The pet store only sold male EVERYTHING. It was really annoying, but that's besides the point. If I breed these boys and hold back some girls from both litters and flip flop daddies, as to avoid as much inbreeding as possible, will the second generation of babies be dumbos?
Also, do you think the "hairless" is a double rex or a hairless/standard. I understand that both are crappy hairlesses, but is their any way to tell before breeding it out? Do hairless rats normally have curly whiskers?
Thanks!!! Now pictures!
SUPER CUTE!!

Re: My First DUMBOS!!!! Need to pick someones brains also
Congrats! I have one Black hooded Dumbo girl. My question is this (and I am going to Google this as well). Is dumbo a recessive in that if I would breed the dumbo to a normal fancy rat, I would get normal looking babies het for dumbo? Then breed a male to a female to get Dumbos?

That's what I'm thinking, but I'm not sure. I know rat genetics are crazy difficult compared to ball pythons. I have enough troubles with BPs, I'm not even going to attempt rat genetics!!!

Haha...I hear that. I was just wondering is all. I am just glad my breeding colony is established and going strong. Although not a large amount by no means, I just had 40 new pups in the last 2 weeks. That's enough for almost 7 weeks of feedings once they are big enough.

After I asked I did some research on Google but thanks for clarifying.

So, your second generation babies should be 50% dumbo babies and 50% het for dumbos with standard ears.
Your hairless looks like a double rex hairless to me. If you breed him to a normal female you should get a bunch of rex babies.
If you have any other questions I would be more than happy to help you out.
 Thank you so much!!! I was hoping it was as simple as breeding the babies back to the other dumbo!!! YAY!
:banana::banana: I'm glad you also think he's a double rex! That's what I was guessing. Oh man I'll be so happy if he throws rex babies!!!! I have been looking for dumbos and rexes for years!
