Whats going on????
Why does my ball python feel threatend? I notice lately my female ball python 750 grams hiss louder then a angry alley cat. My temp. Is correct and she is eating every 7 days. Evertime i try to handle her or touch her the hissing gets louder. I notice she does not get in the s position but the hissing is so loud i may change her name to the hisser. Do u think she is bluffing? Or should i go ahead and pick her up like my other 7 ball pythons? Im not scared of being bitten..... Okay bpnet im scared lol! Its like geting in the ring with mike tyson in his youth! what should i do? Any tips will be useful.
Thanks

Re: Whats going on????
Bluffing! Pick her up and she'll be fine. If handled regularly she'll probably stop hissing all together.

Re: Whats going on????
I will start handling her more often like 10min everyother day except when she eats. I will let her bluff her self for 48hrs lol!
Thanks again mr bowden.

Re: Whats going on????
Some just like to hiss. I have a couple that I've had for years and they will hiss every time I go to pick them up, but they never bite. Most of my babies will hiss when they're younger, but they grow out of it.
Don't take it personal. ;)

Re: Whats going on????
My favorite ball "huffs" every single time I pick him up. I call it huffing because they do it with mouth closed, as opposed to open mouth hissing.
He's done it since I brought him home, and continues to do it now. I think he does it because he thinks he is supposed to now. At first he was bluffing, warning big, bad me he could be plenty tough if he had to. Now, I believe he thinks it is expected of him. I'll open his tub, gently lift his hide, and he's looking up at me, just waiting. But as soon as I touch him, he huffs. Once or twice he has almost forgotten to do it, then it's like he suddenly remembers and huffs a little late. It's so cute.
Another of my bigger girls huffs VERY loudly when I go to pick her up, but she never even offers to bite. She's all bark and no bite as the saying goes. I wouldn't let her scare you off. My husband has a little boy, and because it huffed all the time, he was afraid to hold him, now his snake is a mean little monster who snaps at everything. Don't let her bluff turn into something worse.

Re: Whats going on????
Personally, In loving the little fire female I just got, not because she is a fire so much, but because She likes to hiss A LOT. I hadn't actually had any of my other BPs hiss, EVER. It was a good experience.
I know this might sound weird to you, but she started hissing and hissing, I was like "FINALLY A HISSING SNAKE YEAAAAAA!!!!!!!:carrot:
She keeps me on my toes, I know she will eventually bit me at some point, well maybe not. But she always scares me with the first hiss. Always does it when I least expect it.... :snake:

Re: Whats going on????
my new pastel is a lil under 400 and he hisses almost everytime i open his tub. i just touch him so he knows i wont kill him n then i pick him up. dont leave him alone when he does it or else he will learn that u will leave him alone when he does it, so he will always do it and think he has u trained. lol

LMAO, I used to have a male pastel that did that too, funny stuff.
I love the hissers, the couple that I have that hiss are also a couple of my best eaters, and when held calm right down.
It makes me smile to hear that hisssssss :snake:
