okay so im building a wooden display cage for my BP should i coat the inside with polyurethane to prevent mold and mildew?

Well you definitely need to coat the inside with something. I have seen somepeople make a liner on the inside with laminate tiles. It looks pretty nice and seems easy to do.

Make sure you don't make the display too big so that it is hard to heat and maintain proper humidity.

Yes. I used water based polyurethane on mine. You will need to let it dry and air out for a couple weeks before you can put your snakes in.

yea see i was thinking about the tiles it seems like they would work very well but they also stay cold even when the are heated. don't the tiles not conduct heat very well?

Well they are laminate tiles so they are basically made of plastic. They wouldn't be cold like a real tile floor.

I coated mine with several coats of marine laminate (the stuff is expensive, but it is made to be used on boats and docks, so it should work fine for a cage!)

Also, I actually skipped the wood for the floor, and made a 1/4" ledge along the inside of the bottom of my cage and made the floor out of plexiglass, and then put plexiglass two inches high along the bottom walls (and then sealed it all with waterproof caulking sealant.)

the cage will be 3ft by 1ft9in by 3ftby1ft11in it is a tall enclosure but also a very decent deep it will have 4 hides (2 in the hot and 2 in the cool zone) it will have a raise heating pad kinda like a tree and a ground level heating pad it will have a very very reasonable water dish but also not too big, and 4 vent holes with screen covers for ventalation. i will post pics as soon as it is finished.:D

If I am reading that right, you are building a cage that is over 9 square feet for a BALL PYTHON?

These are very small snakes that enjoy closed cramped spaces, not open ones. 9 square feet is something you would put a big boa in...

if you see the cage its not all that large and once all the hides and others are put in it will not seem as large. i have laid out imitation pieces on the in side and it is actually just about perfect. i know it seems large but its really not.
