Do these markings look like poss het??
I purchased this boy as a blond pastel from my local herp shop. I know he came from a reputable local breeder but this guy is known to never give out much info. Very secretive and doesnt trust anyone he doesnt personally know. So i was unable to get any genetic background on him. I noticed these markings on his belly and got to wondering if he may be a possible het for pied. None of the babys from my pairing of the pastel to my odd normal had markings like these. All of which were pastel. Then again, they wouldnt if the sire was only a 66% possible het.
Take a look and tell me what you think. Should i even try breeding him to a pied to find out? Or do you think this is just a normal appearing pastel. Thanks so much for your opinions!!

You have nothing to lose doing that. On the bright side if you breed him to a pied(and he isn't het) you will make a bunch of 100% hets, some being pastels. If you get lucky and land a male pastel het for pied, you could breed him to mom the following year to possibly make pastel pieds!!:gj:

That would definitely be worth it even if he wasn't a het! Pastel het pieds :gj:
He definitely has what looks like pied markers. I say it's worth a shot, you don't lose either way!

My Male Pastel has what you would consider VERY strong het pied markers just like that. But I know for a fact hes just a normal pastel from a NormalxPastel breeding. But can't hurt to try I guess :gj:

Come on guys! Anyone else familier with breeding Pieds? I almost sold this male earlier in the season thinking he doesnt fit into my projects but if i get enough people saying that those look like pied markers i might try my luck with him.
What gets me is that they are solid lines running along both sides at least 6 inches and they hook into the vent. Plus the couple random faint hooks higher up on his body.

So then this is a normal trait for Pastels then? But it doesnt mean anything genetic is going on or that it has any het pied allele's in the genes right?

Even a normal snake with Het pied Markers is not guaranteed het.

I will say my pastel has a bit of the "pied marker" as well.
Like I said before it still wouldn't hurt to make some pastel het pieds! Unless you have a male pied, then I probably wouldn't use your pastel.

Trying it would cost you the chance to breed the pied female to some other male. But if you are interested in making your own pastel het pieds anyway then you are only loosing the opportunity to use a known pastel het pied male instead. Can you afford a pastel het pied male?
I guess you also give up the chance to breed your pied female to a super pastel and be more sure of a pastel het pied but even then you are taking the chance she doesn't lay or the eggs go bad so go for it. The breedable pied female is a very valuable part of this equation not to be spent lightly.
If by the time your pied female is getting ready to breed the answer is that you can't afford a pastel 100% het pied (or at least known possible het pied) and you still want to go for pastel het pied then why not. At least you have the chance he is a het and worst case you have the shot at pastel het pied.
I could see a big breeder selling pastel possible het pied males as just pastel with no documentation.
