A rheostat is essentially a dimmer switch, you can pick them up at lowes, wal-mart, etc. They are manual devices that require regular adjustment depending on ambient temperature, etc. We use these on free-standing tubs as needed, usually only as a stopgap before moving our new acquisitions into their permanant rack-based homes.

A thermostat is exactly like the one on your A/C system at home. It measures temperature, in most cases with a probe that you put somewhere in or under the enclosure, and turns the power to the heating elements on and off as needed. As such, you only adjust the pre-determined setting, and it does the rest.

As expected, thermostats cost more, but are worth their weight in gold if you have multiple enclosures using the same type of heating element (ie, a rack with 10 1' sections of heat-tape). If you are mixing brands of heating pads, or using different sizes of tape, you will want to use multiple thermostats/rheostats due to differences in heat output between different elements.

Mine didn't, I checked all over, not all wal-mart's have it, if yours does your lucky, get thermometer and cheap, I had to get one from my pet store, was $35'ish i think but the gauge doesnt go in the tank, a major plus in my book. You might have to search around, but if yours has it then I'd grab it, unless your looking for one to go outside the tank like I was, in that case, heres a really nice one for ya:

I have two of these and love em.

Ok I bought two different hides. Both of them are too easily moved around. Im getting frustrated cause I cant tape them without one side coming off. help? They are both light, cause I couldnt find something easy to get into and small and heavy.

Anyway I got everything but thermostat. Ill buy it online or something.

I had that very same problem, had to get a tree type thing to help hold the hides down cause she kept picking them up and moving them. Only real suggestion is to find hides that are heavy and small or find something small you can put ontop of it. it can be tough, but im sure you can find something to set on the hides. her moving them around her tank def got on my nerves though, so I can completely relate to ya.

your def heading in the right direction, keep up the good work.

    EEEP:eek:

No tape in the tank please!!

The fact he can move them isn't really that much of a big deal - they can move everything eventually.

As long as they are nice and snug and (hopefully) both the same just keep moving them back to either end when your in. :)

If you find he is moving them too much for you then you can use other things to hold them in place - like branches or rocks (remember to clean them thoroughly first).

Yup you can make great savings buying these things online - it just means having to wait for delivery times etc.

Main thing is getting an accurate reading of all the temps etc so you know where you stand at the moment to avoid wasting money buying stuff you don't actully need ( we won't do that to ya but a lot of pet shops will ).

Yes they did indeed... anyway, the temps are lower then I had hoped for, but Im getting them up ATM, and I think hell do alot better, my readings are like 76/83 atm and rising with 58% humidity.

I, personally, use this rheostat. I found it at Petsmart for 20 bucks. You kinda get what you pay for, but as long as you check your thermometer to make sure it stays in the right temp range, it's fine. I haven't had any problems with mine.

EDIT: Oh, and as Dr Del said, tape is a no-no. There's been some really horrible events with snakes and tape before(think eye removal :( )

    Hi again,:)

Yup it means he is drinking at least. Do you have the opportunity to ask the people you got him from what they had tried on the eating front or do you not feel they would be all that reliable a source of the information?
