Re: Would a paintball kill a cat?
I think that if someone's stray cat happens to enter a yard where someone's dog is fenced in.. and the dog goes after that cat.. it is not the dog owner's fault. The cat is trespassing, and the only way to prevent that would be to safely confine the cat to a house, or maybe a completely fenced-in outdoor dog-kennel type enclosure that's fenced on all sides but the floor. I actually saw a house where they had a large side porch completely screened in and there were a bunch of cats playing in there; they either did a cat rescue, or just enjoyed having lots of cats. :)
What would happen if I let my horses roam free without fences? lol.. horrible things.. so why is it OK to let a cat, dog, wombat or kangaroo pet roam free?

Its one thing for an outside dog to attack a cat. It's quite another to set a dog on a cat.

My three are 100% indoor cats. They'd be dead in minutes if they were outside around here.
My parents back in IN have some barn cats. They were dumped and quite honestly HATE being inside. So my father set up shelter in the barn and they feed them and are slowly getting them neutered and spayed.
However a huge difference for my parents is that they live in the country, not town.

How do you train a dog not to bark at or go crazy when a cat is in the dog's yard? My dog has been to obedience training and did great, but I don't recall the day they trained her not to bark at intruding cats! She barks at people passing by, other dogs, cats, crows, squirrels, the wind, etc, but that is her job in the house, and I depend on her barking so I know if something is going on outside.

That dog being a hunting dog is making you look even worse when you say he goes crazy in the house when he sees a cat outside. My dad has used dozens of dogs over the years to hunt and every one of them was trained to bark at people and no animals except while outside. It is possible to train them, you just have not. Any good trainer can do it, find one.

What exactly do you consider a serious injury.. have you ever been hit by a paintball? Ive been hit by one at 50 feet and it broke blood vessels and made a bruise the size of my fist....

    I really don't get your response :)

i have been hit by paintballs and the worst i ever got was a ping-pong ball size bruise

I took this part of the conversation to PMs so as not to clutter up SPJs thread more so.

BD1, it is quite possible to have a dog that is well trained. One that 'goes crazy' and barks at everything is not. If you want to continue this please take it to PMs as we are getting very very off topic.

my husband plays professional level paintball in tournaments around the southeast. believe me, a paintball can cause some pretty nasty injuries. all it takes is one, at the right angle--and this is on grown men wearing the proper protection and equipment. so seriously people--just don't.

Actually dear I do have "years of experience" with hunting dogs having two uncles that bred and trained and generally had a long waiting list to sell various dog breeds specific to certain hunting needs. None of their dogs were allowed to get away with "going crazy" over any animal in the yard. Each dog was trained specifically to react in a certain manner to the animal being hunted based on their breed and it's natural instinct.

Bird dogs to go to point only on birds, retreivers to sit still and quiet until released to do the retreival of water birds, hounds to scent, follow and not savage downed deer and so forth. Each dog was a beautiful animal, well trained and under control at all times. Any dog that chased cats, rabbits or whatever was soon trained out of that undisciplined habit. Hunting breeds are one of the best and easiest of dogs to train as they have a natural affinity with humans and a need to work with you and respond to good training.

A Labrador Retriever/Weimaraner cross is not a recognized hunting breed. It is a cross between two sporting breeds and having kept Labs for years they can be hard to handle as younger dogs being quite hyper as are the lovely "grey ghosts". Sounds like your dog's instinct to hunt needs direction from a responsible party to avoid problems with other animals. I know our boxer/lab cross wants to chase the feral cats in our neighbourhood but a good sharp tug on her Gentle Leader halter and a firm "NO" is getting the point across that cats are not a prey item nor do I wish them hunted by her.

Why was this question even asked? We are obviously a group of animal lovers on this site..Harming any animals for doing what comes naturally to them is wrong, the cats do not know that they are being a nusiance, they are just being cats......If you have a stray cat problem, call animal control.
