My mom hates snakes. I haven't told her yet that I have one, so when they visit for Christmas it should be interesting. My husband said not to even tell her- just say it is a lizard hiding in the tank:) . I am hoping I can get her to see that snakes are nice -she kills the poor little gardener snakes she finds in her yard:( ...

Ok, I've got one that tops it all. My friend got a corn snake and her mother flipped out. Now she needs somewhere to house it for a while and my other friend shellie mentioned to her father about holding the snake for a bit and her father WENT OFF!

    He began saying the following:

"I never want a snake in this house, ever. God condemns snakes and I don't want that evil in my house. A snake tempted Eve to eat from the tree and that is why God hates them. They are cursed and evil."

He basically went on and on about how evil snakes were. I told my friend "A snake did not tempt Eve. The devil disguised himself as a snake, so its not the snakes' fault. Its like punishing a whole people for the misdeeds of another. It just doesn't make sense."

Personally, I think that's like punishing a whole flock of sheep just because a wolf in sheeps clothing did something bad. The man is a total tard. Its amazing how people can be so ignorant about snakes.

This is my all time fav. excuse. If people did away with all of the things that did bad in the bible we would be in a really messed up world. Noah's staff turned into the cobra in order to persuade Pharo to free the jewish slaves. Exodus 4:1-5, Exodus 7: 7-16.

Does the Bible state that snakes are evil?

Nope. If you glance through the verses, you'll never find anyplace where snakes are specifically called evil critters. Rather, the snake is used as a symbol for everything from Satan to alcohol, from lying to wisdom. Quite a range. Symbolism is used to make it easier to understand something, and does not denote inherent characteristics. For example, the dove is used as a symbol for the Holy Spirit in the New Testament, but there's nothing particularly holy about a bird. At different times, the lion is used positively ("Lion of Judah") and negatively (Satan going about like a "roaring lion").

Beyond the sundry references to snakes is a major thematic symbolism stretching through the scriptures. In Genesis, after Satan shows up in the guise of a reptile, the snake is given a specific representative purpose: the effects of sin. Just as the snake was "separated" from its prior position (considered an enemy of man, the Hebrew expression "eating dust" being a reference to being made low), so man was separated from his prior relationship with God. This separation is not necessarily permanent, though. Symbolically, we see a representation of a metal serpent on a pole used to save Israel in the desert, foreshadowing the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The Israelites who gazed on the brass serpent were saved from snake-bite; Further, we see the inclusion of the snake in the future physical kingdom of God, restoring its position in nature. Just as the serpent is restored, so is man's relationship to God eternally restored, for those who purpose to become disciples of Christ.

So, in effect, the snake is far from being an evil outcast in Biblical theology. It is, rather, a powerful representation of the primary theme in Christianity.

Tell them to put that in their pipe and smoke it.. :carrot:

Ahh, the whole evil snake thing. LOL
I had some SDA people here at the house (once) and they asked about our tarantulas...so we told them a bit about them and mentioned our snake in the bedroom. They started in on how evil snakes are...basically the same type thing that Jay posted.
I commented on how much I loved my little Ketzel (that's her name) and how I LOVE giving her kisses....they've never been back. :P

    ~Edit~
No, wait, they did come back once....but wouldn't even step foot onto the porch.

We just had a really awful storm causing power outages across the state. I

had to take my snake to work and hide him under my desk. (Carrying case and
heat pad) Well I was really worried I would have a problem. Word through
my office mate got out that I had a snake with me and all of a sudden people
who "hated" snakes got a good look at their first ball python. My weirdo snake
was as equally interested in them as well. Everybody checked each other out
and after a thousand questions later Cyrus was deemed cool. Everyone wants
to know if I am going to bring him back. " )
Not something I would really want to do but I am impressed with my coworkers
for excepting something that was clearly out of the norm for them.

I wanted a snake the entire time I was growing up, but my mom always forbade it in her house. Now that I've moved and got Siliast, she asks about him frequently. She's also asked to see him on the webcam, so she has also seen him. She initially asked all about him when I first got him--about what he ate, where I kept him, things like that. I think she didn't think I'd be able to take care of him.

My brother seems to be okay with him--I think Travis wanted a snake growing up too. He asked a bunch of questions as well. My roommate(the female one) is obviously fine with him, though I feed him and do most of the care for him. My other roommate doesn't seem to mind him, but does not seem eager to really hold him. We have not yet introduced him to the in-law and the kidlet. We're not sure how it would be taken..Though it's something I'm going to approach soon. I want to be able to take him out of the basement occassionally, or somesuch, and I can't do that if they don't know about him..

Re: Loved ones don't like your herp friends ???
I've always had a thing for reptiles since I was a kid, I just never owned a snake until later on due to having to keep certain temperatures and of course feeding them rodents (since I liked them as well), so I thought I'd need to be a little older to be able to and the fact that my parents, well my dad, isn't exactly crazy about them. Anyway, my friend had a ball python and thats when I really started wanting a snake and after a month or so of wanting one, I got one. I neglected to tell my dad, considering if I asked I knew what the answer would be. A few days after having him, my dad walks in my room and spots the cage and says something on the lines of "What the **** is that??" After telling him it was a ball python he says "Take that **** thing back, we got enough devil in this house." He also said that it was costing him money too (the heat lamp) and to turn it off. Well after a couple days of arguing, he finally comes to the realization that he is there to stay. For a little time when my dad would get mad at me, he would make me turn his heat lamp off...yeah kind of stupid. He quit doing that though and actually asks me questions about him now, still doesn't care to hold him though. My brother didn't care for him much at first either, but now begs to be able to hold him and my mom always liked him. :snake:

Hmm, why did I never see this post...

    Here's the rundown for me:
My BF/partner - likes animals but isn't crazy about them. He talks to my rats and watches the snakes, but he won't clean anything or hold the reptiles.

Mom - She likes animals, and likes hearing about the snakes and gecko, but I don't think she would ever want to hold them. Heck, I don't think she'd want to touch the rats either, and she loves furry critters. :)

Dad - Thinks I'm nuts for owning a 'large' snake, but he's a very cynical man and sarcastic at times. He loves animals, so I'm sure if he came here he would like the snakes.

"In Laws" - This is where the fun is. My BF's parents are interesting...his dad really likes reptiles but isn't thrilled that snakes live in our apartment. His mom is absolutely terrified of any reptile or amphibian. They came over before I had the snakes, and his dad questioned me on the Bearded Dragon while his mom headed outside to wait for us. :)
