Re: Best place in the world to live
TX actually seems really cool, though I have never been there personally. I am into guns, horses, wide-open spaces and woodlands.. seems like you guys have that stuff covered. But if I had neighbors within 1000 feet, that'd be too close. I would appreciate the lack of snowfall.. it gets old after the first two feet or so of the year. I never even mind snow, but I HATE driving in whiteout conditions!

To each their own. ;) I'm looking forward to some beautiful West coast greenery and getting out of this dusty polluted dried up wasteland of a city. My heart aches to be closer to the ocean and my better half and I have even taken quizzes that confirm Portland is the right spot for us. It feels right. The spirit knows what it wants. :)

Re: Best place in the world to live
Obviously everybody is going to be biased towards there own home town/city, as they say theres no place home like and no matter how big a dump it really is, you will always defend it.
The only place for me is sunny Northern Ireland, well it is for a couple of days a year anyway. Now with forty years of sectarian and terrorist violence hopefully behind us this wee country is certainly the place to be. I've been to a few places round the world, Barbados, Cape Cod, New York, Spain, Tenerife, Holland, France etc but still love getting home and back in amongst your own again.
Few pics from my hometown. Come visit us, you know you want too

Re: Best place in the world to live
Having been raised as an Army brat I lived in South Carolina, Texas, Kentucky, Ohio, Oklahoma, and Germany. While I love certain aspects of each, I doubt I will ever leave Florida. I love the warm winters (we had a cold blast this past week - got down to 32 degress - first time in 4 years!), the green landscape, the tropical plants, the beach, the diversity, the water (fishing, sking, wakeboarding, jet sking, boating, sailing, etc.), the sunny days, less establishment (if you want to sit on the school board, you don't have to come from a family that has lived in the area for 100 years) and the fact that I can get to the west coast in 1 1/2 hours and the east coast in 45 minutes.
Florida does have hot summers, no mountains (this is one of the biggest downers for me), limited affordable housing (avg price around Orlando for a home is $225,000), and low wages compared to California and the Northeast.
Hard choice facing you - good luck!

Re: Best place in the world to live
I have to say that Canada is lovely; at least the parts that I have been to. Granted, I am not a fan of a socialist health care system, and I know many people who live there that can't even find a doctor and need to pay for care stateside (they are still technically US residents but living in Canada.) But Ontario, especially around the 1000 Islands area.. wow! Talk about awesome; seeing bald eagles and wolves in your backyard. A little more awesome than the coyotes and hawke we have here.. but I will never move up there because of their healthcare and for logistic reasons.. but Ontario is my kind of place. Less snow than we have here. I don't mind cold at all; it is huge amounts of snow that bother me. You don't have to plow rain!

Wow~ Ireland looks really beautiful! I have a son who is half Irish; grandparents on his father's side immigrated to New York, surname Ormond. He'd like to visit Ireland one day....
