It does not bother me when people take the time to at least touch or watch them, and they don't like them afterwards; there are certain animals I can't stand myself. it is the mindless fear that people have when they never took the time to research something or see how it acts, they just fear it or are grossed out by it.. ya know?

My wife hates the snakes and the rats. Cool thing is, she "allows" me to have as many as I want.My 8 year old son, doesn't really like them, but trys real hard to.....

Re: Loved ones don't like your herp friends ???
Since my earlier post, my mom, sister and niece came to visit. My sister was okay w/ the critters (esp. since they spent the night w/the rats in Robin's room while I was at work). Amy, my niece thought the diff. snakes were really cool and wanted to / got to hold a selection of them...Hera, Zeus, Flurry, Pinky, Apollo and Wrigley. Amy was a part of Zoo Corp, but now works with kids at ZooCamp part time in Seattle, so doesn't have any fear of the snakes.

My mom didn't hold any of them, but she wasn't as cool about them as I had expected. When I was teaching them the difference btwn Hera/Wrigley's normal, Pinky's pastel and Apollo's hypo pastel colors and patterns, she was pretty attentive. She did comment tho how she wasn't surprised that I got so deep into snakes, seeing as how much I enjoyed them when I was a student @ TVCC (our local community college where I did workstudy in the biology dept caring for the rats, mice and snakes for the prof. < I was living at home at the time...I was 16-17. >)

So that part of it was all pretty nice. Allison, my sister, took a bunch of dig. pics of Amy holding the snakes, so that was fun, too. :D

Sorry to hear that things aren't as positive in your family. :( Maybe your son will learn to like them and they'll grow on your wife!

My ex inlaws said if I didn't get rid of the snakes they wouldn't visit in the future. When they returned 4 months later I had a large bp in a huge display tank next to the bed in the guest bedroom. By the way, did I mention they are ex inlaws??:carrot:

Most of my family thinks I am nuts anyway so the fact I keep snakes only enforces it. It doesn't keep them from visting so no harm no foul.

My bro-in-law is totally freaked out by snakes but now he always inquires on how Ozzy is doing which is huge for him.

It's just me and my son at the house and he is cool with them so that is all that really matters.

Heck alot of my friends and family have pets and kids for that matter I am not to fond of and it doesn't stop me from visiting. If I can get over it so can they :)

Hmm, loved ones and my pets...heh. :D My mom is afraid of everything under the sun that has less than 2 or more than 4 legs...as is my sister, my brothers aren't. My inlaws are TERRORFIED of my tarantulas (especially my mother in law). She flat refuses to step foot into the house, which is fine by me, I don't want her in my house anyway.
*I* use to be terrorfied of anything that had more than 4 legs and could walk, upside down on my celing.....until I met my husband.
No, he doesn't have more than 4 legs and can't walk on the celing...or at least not that I'm going to admit to. :P
Snakes I've always loved and never feared but arachnids, that was a different story. My husband got me into tarantulas, scorpions and whatnot and now I think I'm one of those who loves them even more than he does.

My family doesn't even live in the same state that I do, except my sister, but I never see her or any of them anyway...so I don't really care.
    They don't know I have snakes...hmmmmmmmm ;)
