Re: Gerald Super Dwarf Ultra Ivory Retic Progression
Any local breeders that you trust enough to let him visit his female?

I’m the only person I know that keeps snakes, let alone anyone that breeds retics. Looking into finding him a new home because I live alone and honestly am not so sure that I can manage an 8’ angry chainsaw solo.

I get it. If I can't hand it to a kid, I don't want it. Is a tough call.

That's crazy man I'm sorry. I can't believe how deep that cut is on him. Please keep us posted on all of them.

Looks worse than it is really. Didn’t cut through the muscle at all. Still incredibly stressful to deal with. It sucks that keeping these snakes is becoming not fun anymore

Stay the course mate👍
I’m sure he’ll settle again after this surge of testosterone.
If not, I agree with you in the option mentioned above.
All is well with Wallace here but he’s about as big as I want him.
Perfect gentleman for handling today.
I hope Gerald settles. I didn’t expect you to have to deal with two problem retics.
Good luck man!

Thank you Gio. Never an enjoyable keeper’s moment over here as of recently. Going to get some forearm length suede welding gloves for dealing with Gerald. These were very much combative bites that he delivered. Had he landed my wrist I could be in a bad way.
Food doesn’t slow him down now either. Ate two days ago and has been arching, cruising, pushing nonstop.
Phyllis shed out too and is back to pushing and still won’t eat. Lab results of her oral swab confirmed bacterial infection which means another round of a couple different antibiotics injections for a while.
Sometimes I wonder if I should have just stayed with ball pythons... dull from an interactive standpoint but my god, their lack of headache sounds very appealing right now

Yeah arching like that is male combat/dominance, deff in breeding mode. Sorry to hear it, as well as the continued issues with Phyllis; you've been having the worst luck with the 'tics and you do so much to make it work. Gloves are a good idea, the bites can really do damage, slashing gashes that leave with nerve damage. Glad he only nicked you. If you have to rehome, it's totally understandable. I wish you the best!

For real, I just can’t win. Ever.
And I absolutely cannot have nerve damage in my hands/fingers. I’m an artist first and foremost and risking permanent damage to my fine motor skills is not an option.
Last thing I can try is the bigger cages for the both of them. But at this rate I can’t responsibly invest much more money in these animals aside from feeding. Between cages, heat panel, and vet visits in the last couple months I’ve dropped close to $2k on Phyllis alone. I love em both but Jesus Christ, I can’t keep up at this pace. Sucks feeling so defeated

Hey,
I hear ya on all of it so know that I'm in you corner.
NOOOOOOOO not just royal pythons LOL!
If you dump the retics, more BCC boas and I'll send you to Nick Mutton for some Brisbane Coastal Carpets!
Both the boas and carpets are perfect keeps.

Re: Gerald Super Dwarf Ultra Ivory Retic Progression
Sorry to hear about the issues with your retics Crook. It slurps when a hobby isn't fun anymore. Sometimes we have to realize when we've taken on too much and make adjustments. There's nothing wrong with that. There are lots of other large snakes that aren't quite as demanding and imposing as retics. I LOVE my gentle giant Olive python. My boas and carpets aren't quite giants but they're great snakes and they'll be pretty impressive as adults. The jury is still out on my scrub but so far he's been pretty mellow too. As much as I was tempted by keeping retics there was a part of me that felt like I wasn't quite there yet. Their size, pushing tendencies, pee and poop tsunamis, and especially those teeth were a bridge too far for me. You've got a lot to think about and plenty of options. I wish you all the best with whatever you decide.

Boas and GTPs. There is a reason most of my collection is boas and Pat is pretty much an angel for a GTP. I dont really 'play' with him but he is pretty happy to poke his head outside the cage if i leave a door open at night and never strikes. Just looks at me and wonders whats going on but then again Caesar does the same. He's actually in shed atm and spun his cool hide around so the door was facing the back of the cage lol. I lifted it off of him and moved it back to to cool side and put it the right way. Petted him and he just sat there. Didnt even so much as flick a tongue. Then after about an hour of sitting in the open, he finally moved and went into the cool hide again.
Sucks about Gerald but i bet once breeding time is over, he will hopefully mellow back out. And as for Phyllis, i have nothing to offer there, as all of my thoughts of solutions have been tried already.
Caesar did push like crazy and was antsy when he wanted to breed. He also would arch when i petted him but he never struck at me. Just wouldnt stop cruising, arching and pushing. This went on for about 2 weeks i guess. Then all of a sudden he stopped and went back to being happy no arching no pushing Caesar.
And you cant get rid of Gerald. I love him :) but then like i said, im a sucker for white snakes lol.
Oh and off topic but i think tomorrow, I'm finally going to get a small chest freezer haha. I was so tempted to pick up a red neo Biak GTP though haha.

Re: Gerald Super Dwarf Ultra Ivory Retic Progression
Not everyone has bad experiences with reticulated pythons. Yes the males can be challenging. I think more so if a mature female is around. He just wants to get laid. Is sad that she rejected him. I think would have solved a lot of both animals issues. I wonder what their size difference is? If they have ever been close to each other at a young age? And if that would even make a difference? I am far from an expert. I talk to breeders a lot and read a lot. Have you placed his skin in her cage so she can get use to his smell? Is her rejection of him so great that him being in the same room that she is pushing to get away from him? Keep trying and hang in there.

You shouldn't have to breed an animal to keep it though. That also opens up more issues, would he even want to deal with all those eggs? I guess you could freeze them off if unwanted, it just seems unneeded. It also seems like Phyllis' issues are due to the infection. Females go in season but they don't normally get antsy like males do. She's off food right now, probably breeding is the last thing on her mind, she wants her mouth better. just my $0.02

I agree completely. I think in his situation that Gerald is going to rage till he gets some or the season is over.
Her mouth being sore and infected is a symptom of something else bothering her. You have to treat more than the symptoms here. Is good they get treated and he has done a lot for these 2. Mad respect there. Just like Monty had a toothache. Pissed him off. I had to fix the tooth problem before he calmed down. It has been difficult to find the cause for her. IDK what he should do there. I am just throwing out probable causes and will stop if he feels it is not helpful? I in no way suggest what he should to do to resolve the issue. That is a personal decision for him to figure out. Wish him the best though.

No broken teeth but two self inflicted gashes in his scales. Had to clean his cage before work this morning and it was all out war. This feels unfair to both of us. So frustrating and a definite drain on morale as a keeper

And this ^ is when the "hobby" becomes a chore.
There are certain aspects that are accepted as part of pet ownership and we eagerly take them on.
THIS, is a situation that is obviously draining the poor guy. JM, is a working man, living solo and he certainly has other life priorities.
I don't want to see the "retic experience" end for him. However after spending loads of money, time and fighting some type of anxiety each time he goes to work not knowing what he'll come home to, I have to agree.

Advertised this guy and can’t even give this snake away it seems...
Just now just wrestled him for half an hour to clean his cage. IMMEDIATELY upon getting him back in he thrashed against his water bowl and spilled half of it totally soaking his clean new paper. I’m out of patience

Wow,
Total jackass mode.
I think this will pass though. You should dark out his windows and leave him be for a couple weeks. No food, just water and see if he eventually settles after the breeding season.
As long as he's not pushing and ripping his face up.
Is he still in a 4 foot cage bud?

He’s is pushing nonstop and ripping up his face. Did have his windows blocked for a week with no change. In the 4’ currently. I hate this so much right now and just need him gone.

That sucks man, I'm sorry and feel for you. If your new cage arrives and you can get him into a 6 footer, MAYBE things will improve.
I know you've done everything possible. Is Philly's situation improving or are you thinking of placing them both?

Phyllis still isn’t eating, still swollen face, on another round of two different antibiotic injections currently. I don’t want to place her but the way things are looking I probably couldn’t even if I wanted to. Literally can’t even give Gerald away around here

I think large breeders may have some legal loopholes that apply to them but pretty sure an average hobbyist cannot bring a retic across state lines into Texas, NY, Florida, and maybe a couple others. I’m also not FedEx shipping certified for reptiles and Gerald weighs too much to use ShipYourReptiles.com. If you’re down for a road trip, come and get him and he’s yours. I’m in Starkville, MS.

I might be wrong but i believe JM would have to Delta Dash Gerald. I think UPS and FedEx have weight restrictions which is why you have to ship large cages via freight as well as really large constrictors. Plus the cost to ship FedEx or UPS would probably be a ton of cash. Think Delta Dash is $100. That is how i would have to have a Gila or Beaded shipped to me when i last checked but thats for venomous.
And are you sure that anyone can ship retics to Texas? Last i heard, only those grandfathered in with USARK could ship to Texas as well as certain breeders. Thought it only applied to Texas, Florida and NY.
I'm really surprised no one wants to buy Gerald. I had like 4 people interested in Caesar and I believe Gerald is a more expensive morph. Maybe try and offer him up at a 'steal' price if you really need him gone asap. I would consider it but I really dont have room for another 8 foot snake. And of course this only applies if the guy who interested falls through.

Gerald Super Dwarf Ultra Ivory Retic Progression
I don’t even care about money at this point. The value of my sanity cannot be quantified in dollars. The sooner I can relax and breath again the better, even if I give him away.
I think at the time of either of our purchases Gerald might have been a little pricier but there’s a fair number of platinum and platinum related SD morphs out there and being an incomplete dominant trait it doesn’t seem to hold the same market value as a recessive morph like any of the albino strains.
All I know at this point is that I’m very done with having to armor my torso and arms every time I have to change the damn paper in his cage, which is like twice a day anymore. You can’t even try to touch him when cleaning or he lashes out and thrashes about the entire cage and comes lunging out the door

I rehomed him a few weeks ago. As cool of a snake as he was, it was a sigh of relief. He was never a calm snake to handle and was always pretty spastic. His violently combative behavior was the straw that broke the camel’s back for me. I’m not too proud to say that he had exceeded my abilities as a keeper and had become a liability to my own safety as well as his own. The last thing this hobby needs is another “man maimed by large constrictor” headline or something similar and I didn’t want to tempt that fate.
Guy that’s caring for him said he calmed down as soon as he was away from Phyllis. Go figure. But Phyllis was here before Gerald was so she takes priority.

How big did he get since you had him? Id never keep a large breed snake that was actually trying to do damage.

He was 8’+ and about 13lbs. Definitely not a huge retic but his dental equipment was no joke. Easily could have slashed my hands/wrists/arms to ribbons. He just turned on me at the drop of a dime and that was the deciding factor for me. He was never easy to read, but that coupled with extreme combative behavior was just too much for me being a solo keeper.

Retics have crazy Slashers period.. what your describing is how they all were back when I started buying snakes 29 years ago, you never even considered Retics back then...Good choice. I would never gamble with any snake like that. You actually held on way longer than I would of... It isn’t about being scared, its about being smart and Im no Dummy hahahaha

Dude I rehomed Gerald to a year and a half ago reached out a few days ago to say that Gerald’s doing well. About 9’ and eating like a pig. Also says he’s still not a fan of being handled, very tense and quick moving, but no striking or aggressive/defensive behavior. I think his proximity to Phyllis was a contributing factor in him lashing out at me. Happy to hear that he’s doing well at his new home.

Wallace is probably not quite as bad as your guy was. He still bites the snake hook now and then, but I lather it up with hand sanitizer now and he seems to dislike that immensely.
I think he's primarily keyed for food and is just ready at any moment. If I could ever get him out of his perches I'd handle him more, but he's perched so frequently that I rarely get a chance to get him out.
I'm glad Gerald is doing well and kind of wish you still had him, but you ended up with a double whammy of bad retic experiences.
Enough is enough!

He honestly wasn’t ~that bad until the last month or so I had him, but it was definitely too much for me at the time. I could probably get him back from the guy if I really wanted... but as much as I love retics I think for the time being I’ve moved on from them. Not completely counting them out of the picture in the future, but I think I’ll stick with boas and carpets for now and my ball python Geoffrey of course.

I really hate that you had such a hard time with him. I feel so lucky that my 2 females are easy going. I agree that they are not for most people. They can be food oriented but for me that is easy enough to deal with. I think most pet owners who have them struggle with housing or pushing the most. After Rainbow broke 1/4 inch sheet glass this weekend I upgraded to 1/2 inch plexiglass. I need to get her huge enclosure done asap for sure. If you are ever in the area let me know and would be happy to let you meet Rainbow and Aurora and enjoy some really well behaved animals.
