Also writhing on the floor is often used by low class people to draw attention to themselves.

Many ERs are now used to it and put those people on the bottom of the list. It is a matter of triage. If the ER staff can show that they did a preliminary evaluation and that they had other patients with more sever cases before this one then the hospital is usually safe from a major lawsuit. That is just the way it is.

I speak from experience. It is not a good experience and I am generally a giving person, but I have seen a LOT of abuse of ER staff from obnoxious patrons.

Oh I agree I know half of the EMRT on New Orleans and they are the same way. The problem is it cost someone their life..

    I just think its sad

I agree it is sad, but if the woman or her family was nice, she probably would have been treated right away. Also she must have been really obnoxious for the police to arrest her for a probation violation WHILE she is in the ER.

so, she is in the ER, spewing up blood, and you want the family to be calm cause no one is helping them? I'm sorry, but if I was in the ER with my mom and she was spewing up blood and screaming in pain and no one would help her, I would tear that place apart. I'm not gonna be like, "excuse me miss, my mom is throwing up blood, if you have a sec can you help her?" "excuse me sir, you got a min....? no? o, ok, ill wait my turn." Sorry, that wouldn't happen.

there is no way you can expect people to be calm when a family member is dieing, and then use the excuse, "they were obnoxious, so they don't get help".

And hospital security would be called, long before the police were called. If you didn't settle down then the real police would be called.

I think that the news reporting on this was not fair. Because, ER staff do not ignore someone just for the heck of it. There had to be a good reason why they did not work on this woman right away. Hospital security had to have been involved, because they are the ones that call the police. Also how did the police know that she was in violation of her probation? Someone must have looked up her name to see if there were any outstanding warents for her arrest.

SHE MUST HAVE BEEN TRUELY OBNOXIOUS TO GET THAT SORT OF TREATMENT.

Still can't possibly come to the conclusion that "You act obnoxious, you get no treatment, you die" and it all be OK cause she wasn't acting calm and neither was her family. Anyone else feel the same or agree that if your dieing or a family member is dieing you have to be calm and rash in order to get help?

Seems to me, that the more lower-class people there are in an area.. the less that the tax pool would be.. the more inferior the health care would be. So either get a great job with insurance and keep it or create a business for yourself and move into an affluant area.. or suffer in a poverty-stricken area with no insurance. I definately know what road I am on, and I am loving every minute of it.
I am not sure about chronic, long-term care; never needed it. But in my area, even the local grocery stores give insurance to parttime workers once they have worked there for a certain length of time and showed that they are not a job-hopper.. heck, even wal-mart gave my sister-in-law great insurance, and maternity leave. Seems like the uninsured are oftentimes people who either don't want to work a legitimate job for more than a few days, or are too stuck-up to take a "menial" jub. I worked menially for years, and was fully covered for all of my health issues at the time; free glasses yearly, with exam. Tooth cleaning. Doctor well-visits and prescription drugs; sick visits had a minimal copay. Now that I am in collections, I am happy to say that my employer's health care program is awesome.
Now, take my honey. He is an independent contractor now, and uninsured. My doctor refused to take him on as a patient because of this. he is screwed if he gets sick. He would have to pay out-of-pocket. We are getting married in a few months and I will definately be adding him onto my plan at work.. not saying that he is marrying me just for that (lol) but you just have to work the system in this state of NY; either work like we are, or go live off of the generous welfare system and drive a car worth $40K while you rent a cockroach-infested dump apartment (but that would be a whole 'nother thread/rant..)

This is pretty ineresting. One side seems to think that people heartlessly stood by and watched, with their feet up and reading magazines, while a poor woman died right in front of them and they chose not to help. The other side of the coin would be that the woman's symptoms truly were nothing to react swiftly about when compared to others that were in the ER, who could have had gunshot wounds.. severed limbs, things like that. I am betting that this whole case will be amok in conflicting storylines as to what really happened :(

If they were uninsured then its clear why they wouldn't get any help.
