This is why I don't agree with moving up from one species to the next. Example is I work with Afrocks and Burms. For a person who's never worked with Afrocks, and mainly just worked with other giants...they'd be completely caught off gaurd by an Afrock. Afrocks will do a complete 180 on you in a matter of a second, and go from incredibly placid, and your gentlest snake to the snake you wish you didn't pick up that day. All I'm getting at is the whole Gaining experience from other species to work your way up is rediculous. Only way is to work with the species in question yourself ;)

Jim Mason and Bob Clark have done nothing but GOOD for the herp community. Can you say youve helped?? who are you to say these guys are damaging the collective owners? You have NO room to pass jusdgement without knwoing exactly what your talking about. If their are SOOOOO many running thru the rescues then why is it i never see them? the herp society for my state has had the same 6 snakes for almost 2 years and every shelter in this state calls them to have any the get in picked up. Your just beatin your own chest over an issue your completely clueless about....Truely stop huffin the helium and step away from the computer.

well i would never recommend a retic, burm, or afroc to anyone as their first snake... start off small, and learn how snakes behave... then go big... thats what i meant. :)

That varies on the person as well ;) What I said was just something for the pup's.

I started out with a Ball Python as my first snake, and soon after I got my first Burmese Python when I was around 12. It just all depends on what you can handle, and what kind of commitment your willing to put into your new, or soon to be new pet.

in all honesty my first snake as an adult... on my own, was a burm that i bought impulsively (i had kept snakes as a child and knew at that time enough to feel comfortable to keep a burm)... it was an 8ft snake and all i had to keep him in was a large tank. my wife(exwife) was totally pissed... but from there i i bought a female burm... i accidently bred the two together and the female finally layed eggs... that was it from there, i was hooked... do i still have that burm i got years ago (1998)? ... no! i sold one and gave the other one away...

moral of the story, you have to start somewhere. but before you get knee deep you need to pe prepared and do your homework before you bring that little pig eater home lol!!! :)

What does everyone have against me for wanting this snake? I told you this is no impulse... I worked with them at a local pet shop... he has 2 adult females and a male for breeding. I have been researching as much as I can about them. When I thought I was ready to obtain one I created this thread. This thread wasn't the question of wether or not I should get a burm. It was the point of finding one. My mind is made up and I'm keeping the albino female I have. She is completely tame.. a great feeder and just beautifull! I have already spoke to a friend in reference to a custom built cage and reinforcing it to house and adult burmese. I don't see the issue?

Thank you AndrewH I completey agree with you.
