now you mentioned sand boas before... any photos i can see? what are they like?

i'm so glad you don't mind me picking your brain but information from people who own a critter is just so much better sometimes that reading it off the net.

No problem.. I'm more than happy to share any knowledge I've stumbled upon.

I keep two species of sand boa. The kenyan, and roughscaled. They tame easily, and do not grow large at all. In fact, a male kenyan will stay small enough to be comfortable in a 10 gallon tank his entire life. A big female roughscale will perhaps attain 3'.

They are burrowers, so deep substrate is a must. I use aspen.

These are my two male kenyans. A normal (orange and black) and an anerythristic morph. There are also albino, snow, paradox albino/snow and flame morph kenyans.

my hubby just informed me that our local petstore has a kenyan sand boa for sale... and then i looked at the local breeder and it seems he does as well!

i've read you can keep a few together... now i frown on that thought... what's your thought?

I don't advocate keeping any snake together with another. Aside from stress issues, you have the problem of possible disease/parasite transmission, and difficulty figuring out which one is sick if that ever happens.

One snake per cage is a good rule.

ya that's exactly how i feel as well. thanks for confirming that with me. :)

so far... we are really liking the look of the RTB's still but i'm concerned about the super large enclosure it will need eventually (and it's not like it only lives a short time after all... we'll need the larger encl for many years!)

so i'm searching... again, on the net - relooking at all your suggestions from the first page of this thread and re-examining my options!

As a sand boa owner, I can't say enough how much I love my SB! She's very easy to hold, never tried to bite me, always been a GREAT eater and rather fun to watch her explore her tank at night. Here's a pic of my B&W SB, "Seraph".

I love solomon island boas.. (anything candoia really) they stay small, but if you get one make sure it's a mouse eater, because it's hard to get hatchlings to eat anything but lizards.

I am not sure about temperament.. I think they're pretty mild mannered, but don't quote me on that. Here's a nice website on all candoia boas: http://www.kingsnake.com/candoia/

well, i'd like to introduce you to my new addition... sandy!

    http://www.timelessspirit.com/images...sandyapr06.jpg

i'm still planning on adding something else to our collection... as the hog island boas are sounding like a good idea too... but when i saw this baby at the petstore today... i couldn't resist. she (don't know the sex but have decided she's a girl LOL) had some shed left on her face... so i gave her a little steam bath when she got here... set her up in a 5 gallon tank with carefresh for bedding... and she seems quite content.

do i wait a week to feed her for the first time?

:D:D:D:D thanks to you all for your GREAT suggestions!!!
