The biggest problem I see with hybrids is that even when the ORIGINAL breeder is as transparent and honest as possible... with how often reptiles are swapped, that honestly and lineage may be accidentally or purposefully lost in subsequent buyers, which then muddies the gene pool considerably. If you consider herp keeping as "just a hobby," it seems like not as big a deal... but if you consider it to be a repository of genetics that might someday become useful should the animal become threatened or endangered, it becomes a very serious issue indeed.

So while I have kept and do keep hybrids (a jungle corn and a creamsicle corn), I'm not certain that it's a good thing for the hobby to be engaging in.

I'm really interested in python hybrids because it seems nobody wants to talk about them! I don't know about anyone else but to me, the prospect of an entirely new kind of animal is exciting from a learning standpoint. I think most of us loved learning about new animals when we were kids, and when we got into herps and all of a sudden everything was so much more complex than with mammals.

I see the issues as far as breeding hybrids to other snakes and "polluting the gene pool", but I would be thrilled to learn more about the hybrids themselves and would not even bother breeding them if I had them. I think it should be a one and done kind of deal.

But of course, I'm not everyone, and people would definitely acquire them to breed them, for whatever reasons /:

To me, breeding out a hybrid defeats the entire purpose of creating them in the first place! Or at least the purpose I would have in mind: Observing, caring for, and learning about the hybrid animal itself. There's such a dearth of data (and pictures :)) of python hybrids, at least that I have been able to find. That makes me want to know about them even more.

From part of what you had quoted and agreed to above. Unintended and unexpected health issues as an ethical concern in breeding. There are no shortage of morphs with "problems" from the lethal to deformations to reproductive issues. If that is a concern against hybrid breeding why not morph breeding, you don't know until you try after all? I am not a breeder and not pro hybrid in the least although I would consider one as a pet.

I don't breed snakes just collect them but I don't really see any problems with the principle of breeding hybrids to be honest .


I wonder if it's a similar situation to dogs ..... the mongrels seem to be stronger and healthier than the pedigrees who are all seemingly full of imperfections and faults ....
