    I'm currently using cypress mulch that I buy from my local lawn and garden store where I buy 3 cubic feet for the same price as 1/3 cubic feet. I might give aspen a try at some point just for the economic value but cypress holds humidity really well

    No, kilned dried pine shaving are perfectly safe. I've used it for decades with hundreds of reptiles, small mammals, horses and more! (Look at my video playlist, almost all my snakes are on pine). The substrate you are thinking about is CEDAR!

    I use a mix of aspen and eco earth
