Re: Loved ones don't like your herp friends ???
I have a convert!!!! when my mom found out about my reptiles it was all the same cleche's. OOOOO a lizard and that just gross you keep snakes. So after Katrina I had to move back in with mom and dad's place till I found a house. Well mom got to where she loved Spot (leo). So the other day she pulled me aside and started asking me what they cost what the setup is like to get and so on.. I think my mom wants a leopard gecko. And my dad got to where he like to watch Oprheus eat. He said they still creepd him out but that it was like having a living nature show in the house. And found it very interesting :fest: :partyon: :sweeet:
chalk one up to the Herper he converted a fuzzie only lover

I believe the oldest Bp was 47 yr and a few months before it died. And just because you didnt have a snake to live that long doesnt mean it doesnt happen.
I got my husband to be into snake, and he is now thinking of breeding our rtb and retic. He fell in love with snakes when we first met when he saw my emerald tree boa. But soon realized just because they're pretty, not all will be nice. lol. A few yr later...he got his first snake, which was a python (forget what type) and it lived with us for 9 yrs untill he insisted on going on vacation and believing the snake will be fine without the heating on (this was during the summer and in our house it gets quite hot and humid) We fed him a large rat before we left, and 3wks later we came home to find the snake escaped (So we believe). And havent found him since. That was almost 10 yrs ago. And I find it hard to believe a large python is still living in our house somewhere. But he may still be in our basement. Me and my husband refrain from going down there, HUGE spiders!!! We tried to go down there to see if our snake was down there but this gigantic black/brown spider was soo upset with us being down there is actually chased us away!! And all we have down there are boxes and its mainly used for storage (JUNK!) and our winters are quite cold and I do not believe the snake could've lived during the winter.
Also I converted some of my relatives to likE reptiles. Maybe not snakeS, but iggys and gekos.
Re: Loved ones don't like your herp friends ???
Well I have an update on this one. I work at a bank as many of you know. So last night I hosted the metro christmas party at my home. Well everyone knows I have snakes. We were all sitting around talking and my BCM (Banking Center manager) and 3 first vis presidents are all standing in the corner talking. then I here the BCM say Ed lets see one of your snakes. Of course everyone was like NO DON"T BRING THAT THING OUT HERE! I told them that I would any one that wanted to see them could come to the herp room and I would show them.
I like five people in the herp room and take out Orpheus (my 04 male big boy 1300 grams) so one girl wanted to hold him so I showed her how and she LOVED IT! They all took turns holding him and asking questionsw. Then the question about my rack came up I told them I was planning on breeding them and showed the pics on my computer of all the morphs I am getting and the offspring poss, and so on. I took two orders one for a Spider and one for a Jungle Pastel. :carrot:
See teach people that they are not dangerous hissing bit you at the drop of a hat critters and they might even want one..
Thanks for letting me vent

lol its kinda weird how some people arent afraid of BIG snakes, but they're afraid of a LITTLE spider.luckily for me i dont fear animals that easily.
as for the topic....here's my story: my parents(especially my mom) were afraid of snakes and somehow i couldnt convince them the way i did when it came to getting my first tarantula.so...eventually i walked into a petco and saw BP's on manager's special for $30!! luckily i still had some graduation money and i spent it on my new BP and some other snake supplies. my parents NEVER found out i had a snake in the house(even though it was in the living room "covered up").but once he shed for me for the 1st time, i took the shed skin and showed to my parents and played the "guess what this is" game.my dad figured it out almost immediately and my mom was puzzled.so i showed them my snake and my mom screamed and ran out the back screaming(lol).ever since then my parents have been keeping their eye out on my snakes to see if the snake escaped, but everytime their snuggled in their homes.my other family members dont like snakes either but i have a couple of friends that dont mind snakes.
Re: Loved ones don't like your herp friends ???
My family just takes it in stride; they know I am the oddball of the bunch and could never be comtent with just a cat or goldfish; I need a cat, goldfish, and snakes (among other things...) They just smile and roll their eyes.
BUT.. think of the advantages snakes have versus "cuddly" pets that people usually don't mind.. No noises. Little waste matter/odor. Rare feedings (compared to daily-feeders that most people are used to.)
Re: Loved ones don't like your herp friends ???
My fiance likes my little baby corns, he will hold those guys all the time without getting freaked out. He doesn't not like my ball python that much...
He says its because of how she squeezes and moves...its creepy they don't have legs and she moves when he touches her...well most animals move...duh.
