The quit smoking thread!

I smoked for about 10 years, from about age 15-25. I told myself a lot of excuses too, I was terrified at the thought of never smoking again. I could handle the thought of just not smoking for a day if I had to, or 2 maybe with a lot of willpower, but the thought of never smoking again was somehow terrifying, like I wouldn't be able to live without it. All lies. It sucks for the first few days for sure, but it gets easier after that as long as you don't give in. You just need to get by those moments of weakness and you'll be fine. I did restart twice, but I stopped before I was having more than a handful a day, so it was easier than the first time. Both times I restarted was while my husband still smoked. He vapes instead now, and I have no urge to do that, so I don't see myself starting again. I only get the urge now when I drink heavily, which isn't very often. Good luck :)

That's exactly how it is for me! I can go without it for awhile but when I start to think too much, "This isn't temporary! I'm not waiting until I can get to the store or until I get a lull and can go smoke, I'm done!" I get a little panicky. Weird.

How about switching to vaping or e-cigs instead?
Still can get the nicotine(or nicotine free if you want) without the loss of lung.

I've never smoked and don't intend to. But I have friends who were hardcore smokers. They all switched to e-cigs and like it a lot better.

I have never smoked so I know I can't give the best advice, but I think learning about what it does to your body and all that stuff, like researching about non-smoker's lungs vs. smoker's lungs, that might make you realize what you're doing to yourself!? Again maybe it's not my place but maybe seeing how gross it is might help you stop!

Good luck guys, wishing you all the best xx

P.S. - Weak minds are generally those that think exclusively in absolutes, you seem to be the only one displaying such dichotomy. I push through my autism every day without meds and without accommodations for school so I do get a little frustrated when I see others come up with excuses, but that still gives me no right to judge their mental/emotional fortitude.

I just switched to vaping a week and a half ago, haven't had a cig since. Really does help, I smoked for about 9 years, tried the gum and patches with no success, it's worth a shot if you haven't had any luck quitting!

Chantix has been the most effective helper that I've tried, but it makes me feel so bad that I have a hard time sticking with it.

Keep trying. Try different things if you need to. Patch, gum, cold turkey, wellbutrin, chantrix...try them all if you need to (not all at once though...).

I tried the patch once and it didn't seem to do much for me. I tried cold turkey a couple of times. Sometimes I did okay for a week, sometimes longer. Ended up smoking again.

In the end, it may take multiple attempts using various methods to find one that works for you.

Vaping is something I wanna try, I need to go all-or-nothing with it, I can't do the starter packs from convenience store because I run through them in a day and a half. I wanna try the refillable liquid cartridges. Although I've heard that indulging too much in vapes can cause pneumonia, because you're literally inhaling vapor.

This is going to sound horrible, but you know that song from the commercial, "You don't always die from tobacco, sometimes you just lose a lung, oh you don't always die from tobacco..."? I've actually caught myself singing it in the shower. We (smokers) all know what it's doing to us and I think most of us do care, but I do think we've become a little desensitized to the warnings because there are so many of them so often. But you're right, it's a pretty gross habit! That's not news to any of us.

In response to those who've mentioned the vapor thingy - if the e-cigarette is the same thing, I've tried it. There's actually a lot of suspicion in the medical community that it's very bad for you as well. It didn't help me quit completely, but it did greatly reduce how many cigarettes I smoked. If you're smart enough to stop "smoking" it like you would a real cigarette after a certain amount of time, it can be a great tool. I'd puff on that thing for an hour and be like, "Man, I don't feel so hot. I wonder why?" :)
