Another question I'd like to ask to someone with some genetic skillz is. If someone does in fact produce identical twins and there from a clutch of Heterozygous by normal breeding, are the twins genetically identical? If one proves to be heterozygous will the other sib prove to be as well?
Good question. I think that in the case of an embryo splitting, since they wouldn't be changing their chromosomes, they would both be the same sex, have the same genetic makeup ie: both would either be het for the same traits, or show the same mutations etc... However, they may not be 'identical' in looks. Color and pattern aren't developed in the babies until the last few weeks of incubation which would be long after the split took place. It would be similar to the way that human identical twins don't have the same fingerprints.

I've heard that one way you might be able to tell if the twinning was the result of an embryo splitting would be to check to see if they're sharing the same yolk sac before they emerge all the way from the egg.

Just a follow up. All these twins that have been popping up (mine including) could in fact be identical because theres really no true way to tell if their both of the same sex, because patterns and colors will be developed after the split.

That's it - this thread is now locked. Since some folks feel the need to continue to get in their digs after 3 warnings, the show is now over.
