Re: sushi...
We used a gift cert and tried the local sushi bar. The Calif. rolls were pretty good, and we got a couple of the shrimp. FD wanted to try the squid, so we got some, but after one bite, if it wasn' for the yaki soba noodles, we wouldn't have had much for dinner.
Gag a maggot! :bleh: !!!!

Re: sushi...
Don't think I have ever tried squid sushi. I have had the octopus, and I think that eel is fantastic.

Re: sushi...
Sushi I'd recommend for new sushi eaters:
Tuna cut roll, spicy if you're down with that - bits of raw tuna cut up and rolled inside nori (seaweed) with sushi rice, sometimes the chef will throw in some sprouts.
California or Rainbow roll - fake or real cooked crab meat rolled with veg (carrot, cucumber, sprouts) inside nori with sushi rice on the outside. Rainbow roll adds pieces of raw salmon, tuna, cooked shrimp (ebi), avocado, whatever else the chef fancies on top of the roll before it's cut.
unagi (sea eel) sushi - cooked or seared sea eel sushi, usually served with a bit of um, brown sweet sauce. Personally, I call this "dessert sushi". =)
*not something I'd recommend for beginners, but tamago (cooked and sweetened egg souffle-type thing, cut for sushi) is darn tasty and most people never try it.
Ebi (cooked shrimp) sushi - easy to eat since it's cooked and hey, who doesn't like shrimp. Personally, I don't much care for it, but it's a great piece to try for beginners. I would recommend avoiding live sweet shrimp, which is raw, and may be a bit outside your comfort zone. It's nothing like cooked shrimp. =)
Holy trinity: tuna (maguro), salmon (sake) and yellowtail (hamachi) sushi. All raw. Quality, freshness and origin make a big difference for these guys, but start eating these regularly and you can begin to refine your particular taste. =)

Freakin Sushi expert! I am not sure if they make it out there but at a place in NYC they make rolls with Tempura batter in them. Killer! Check out this menu:

Click on view menu on any of the locations and you can see descriptions of all the different types. Makes me hungry!

Re: sushi...
when we take people out to introduce them to sushi we order about 10 different rolls, that way they can discover the taste for themselves and see what they do and do not like.
once you are 'into' sushi... you can create a meal with 10 different flavours... for example the spicy tuna... is spicy (obviously) while the chopped scallop roll has a mayo/mustard sauce on and in it. (verrrry nice) bbq eel has a sweet sauce, and a california roll isn't high on flavour, but when you turn it into an alaskan roll instead (they place a piece of smoked salmon on top) then you get to flavour it up a bit and for those who don't like salmon... they can just peel the salmon off the top ;)
i love the medium size rolls (diameter) whereas the large rolls are just too big for me to eat comfortably and lady like LOL
cass, you and i definitely need to go out for sushi one day! we'd have a blast!!!

Re: sushi...
You guys got me thinking, that I should try some. i am always paranoid about cooking things to kill off parasites; so it is generally assumed to be safe to eat raw fish without worrying about this? I love all types of seafood, frrom lobster dainties to caviar; and i am not against eating weird things like snails and frog legs.. now I need to try sushi. I am a huge fan of the yakisoba noodles, and rice noodles rock my world.
