Im so glad that you got that snake out of there, and that you found this site. Welcome, newbie! ;) If I was in your position, I'd give you neighbor a few choice words, then tell him he gets no money whatsoever, laugh, slam door, repeat.

He actually wanted $200.00 for a badly injured snake that obviously was injured in his care and likely as a result of his negligence as an owner? Personally I would tell him firmly (or have your parents do so) that he's lucky he got $50.00 and not a visit from animal care and control and that if he wants to push for the rest of the cash you have photo's of the damage he did to this snake. Remember in future when and if you ever do another rescue, get something in writing that the person is releasing the snake to you and has no further claims on it or you. Best to be very clear about who owns the animal as you don't want to work hard to bring a snake back and then have the idiot who hurt it show up and want it back again.

The reason I'm tough on this point is the rescue we did with Rauri the BCI. The twit who couldn't care for him kept referring to him as "her" snake long after she'd turned him over to us. I finally had to nicely but firmly state to her face that I had her sign a piece of paper confirming that Rauri was to be fostered by Mike and I for permanent placement with Becky at a later date and Rauri was in no way "her" snake any longer. We worked hard with Rauri to bring him back from the belly burn/impending rot and to make sure he was socialized and any issues with his general health and his damaged lungs were dealt with. No way was this girl, who apparently could not even figure out how to join a forum to learn to care for what she bought, going to get her hands on him now that he's 100% better than the mess he was when we got him.

If you do rescue, do it in writing. You deserve that protection and so do the creatures you rescue.

Wow! That's just terrible to see. Did your neighbor let this happen to the animal? Or did they find it? ... That poor thing is in terrible shape.
