A light kit is much cheaper than a nice camera (which gets more expensive as you buy more lenses for it, I just paid $519 for my newest lens last night) I bought my Canon Rebel used from a friend for $170 and bought a really nice Canon lens (50mm f1.4) used for $250. That's $939 so far, and that's not all that much for a nice camera.
You could follow this thread to build your own light kit
http://ball-pythons.net/forums/showt...ght-tent-(DUW)
Or buy one for as little as $40 or as much as you want (here is a thread about the one I bought http://ball-pythons.net/forums/showt...-New-Light-Kit).
You might also get a WhiBal card for about $20. You can then use free software to correct the light temperature of your pictures or get Photoshop Elements or Lightroom (programs you'll eventually want if you get a nice camera). Here is a thread on light temperature and pictures http://ball-pythons.net/forums/showt...e-and-Pictures.
Don't let me talk you out of getting a nice camera, they are lots of fun, just thought I would let you know about some of the cheaper accessories that you will want with a nice camera and that can help any camera take better pictures. Hope this post helps you get some great pictures and saves you some money.

Thank you! I've actually made a sorta rickety light tent, haven't used it yet. I have photoshop already, I do digi art & have been playing with ebook covers. It would be a while before i get a camera.

No problem. I did a quick comparison this morning. All pictures on the left were taken under my light kit with my Samsung S5 in auto mode with the flash turned off and all pictures on the right were taken under the same light conditions with my Canon Rebel XT and the Canon 50 mm f1.4 lens with the Rebel set to an ISO of 100, shutter speed of 1/160 sec, and an aperture of f4 and in RAW format. The top right was a little over exposed, so I corrected the exposure with a -1 when opening it in Adobe Photoshop Elements 8. The top pictures are of a male 2012 Jigsaw Blast, the middle pictures are of 2 female 2014 Pastel Mystic Enchis and the bottom pictures are of a male 2014 Pastel GHI.

With good lighting and the right white balance, you should be able to get some good pictures with your iPhone.
