I stumbled on bp.net when I was doing research before getting a snake as a family pet. I had been asking my son's allergist for years about different kinds of animals, and he'd finally ok'd having a snake in the house. Even though I'd worked around reptiles in the past, I'd never actually owned one myself. This turned out to be the best place I found for solid husbandry advice.

After we got Millie, I joined the forums and always found really wonderful people willing to answer my "new mom" questions. (I still do. Would have flipped my twinkies over Millie's hunger strike if it weren't for you guys.)

I keep coming back because none of my friends or extended family appreciate how adorable my little rat lips is. It's wonderful hanging out around people who really love reptiles. I should also probably mention that my husband spends even more time on the forums than I do. He just lurks, though, and doesn't post himself!

    Why do you come here?
I came to this site at the beginning of November, after getting a ball python from Petco that had been in an "accident". One of the sticky thermometers had gotten stuck to the side of his neck, near his head. They had been treating it with silvadene, hoping he would shed. The guy there told me they had been waiting "2 months" for him to shed, and decided to sell him for $20. He had a clump of skin where he had been injured. I had a bearded dragon years ago, but knew next to nothing about ball pythons. I just knew I had to get him out of there.

Thanks to all of you, I now have a Herpstat instead of the plastic piece of junk thermostat I originally purchased. He shed 9 days after leaving Petco. He has eaten regularly up until yesterday - his first refused meal. He is very small in my opinion - according the the guy at the store he should be about 6 months old. But he is thriving. I have read years worth of posts from some of you about enclosures, heat, temps, shed, mice vs rats, humidity, substrate, how often to hold them, different morphs...I'm so grateful that there are people willing to share what they know. Without this forum, I don't know how well Tiki would be faring right now. Information on the web in general about BPs is completely contradicting from one site to the next.

So I stay because I have soooo much to learn, and I love seeing all the pics and hearing all of your stories. Thanks!

Growing up in Hawaii, I've always wanted a pet snake, but they're illegal there. Now that I'm living in the contiguous states, having a snake is no big deal.

I was doing some googling one day for snake info, and found this site. I stuck around for all the pictures, but now that I've found a place where everyone loves snakes, it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. The majority of people tend to be scared or nervous around snakes, but there's none of that here.

And of course, there's so many pictures of cute snakes. :3
