Re: What do you do for a living?
I'm a Transportation Engineer, with a degree in Structural Engineering. I mostly layout intersections, stripe roadways, design highway guidesigns. I also review other firms plans for content prior to final submittal. One of the most interesting jobs I've worked on lately was an ITS or Intelligent Transportation System. It involved installing cameras at 23 intersections which would feed live streaming video through a fiber optic network to the Traffic Control Center. Those manning the video console at the TCC can see what's going on and make any adjustments in the signals they deem necessary, and they work with 911 operators as well in the event of a vehicular accident (911 has screens so they can utilize the cameras as well). At the TCC, the signals could be controlled manualy, or be set to an 'auto pilot' of sorts depending on the time of day, traffic flow, etc... We also installed a system that enables the signals at the intersections to talk to each other to make traffic flow more smoothly during peak hour traffic. It will also send information back to the TCC for data logging. I'm sure you can see how it got the ITS acronym; it's quite a 'smart' system. Anywho... that about sums me up.:)
