And then some...Justin and any minors getting involved in caring for and breeding live animals haven't the slightest clue how much it costs. What is going to happen when a snake gets an RI and it takes a $150 vet visit to clear it up. I can guarantee their parents will not pay for it. Kids without a solid job and income should not be getting involved in this. The animals will end up losing. Justin, Andre and others, if you think this is mean, too bad. Reality is harsh and sometimes when people don't get it, you need to shake them a bit until it sinks in.

I've been told that. I know about risks. I can take everything down. I can stop this. Im not gettting hundreds of snakes. Im getting a few. This will be a temparary type thing Im not going to be a big name breeder. I will sell a few snakes. I liek snakes. I want to breed them. I understand where your going Jamie. Bieng able to look forward to something keeps me going. And I found somehting that I really want to do.

I agree. Plus, I'm not bad mouthing anyone here. But I think when it comes to breeding anything you need the absolute knowledge of your species you are breeding. Would I breed? maybe in about 10 years at the very least. Creating life and making sure it's healthy to be sold to others is a very tricky thing. I'd say you'd need years of hands on knowledge, not just from what you read from a book. I can read a million books about carpentry. However when it came to hands on, that's a whole other thing.

Re: Im getting there....
I see what you mean. Its not like I bought a '03 female and a n '05 male and breeding this season. I have 2-3 years before I do anything.
-
Re: Im getting there....
I agree Jamie, were starting this as adults....we think about the long run and everything that can and will go wrong. Were going slow, and are going to actually breed for a few seasons before deciding if we want to become actual breeders, we do everything one step at a time. Were sitting on 6 snakes now, I couldnt imagine jumping feet first into breeding blind with no clue what's on the other side.
Stangs, how exactly are you doing this? You keep trying to sound better by saying "you dont know what's going down over here" and other things, so knock it off and spill the beans.

Justin, believe me, I get being excited about something. Its very cool that you found something you enjoy. Just keep in mind that you are responsible for this life. Ask your parents whether they would pay for a vet visit in case of emergency. If the answer is no, put a hold on things. I can't even tell you how much I have spent on vet bills, food, supplies in the last 3 years. Thousands. That doesn't even include new animals I have purchased. Just keep it in perspective, calm down a bit and make sure you are thinking ahead.

I am jumping the gun, my parents will help me out when I have problems. I will hold down. This thread wasn't a start of this. It was jsut somehting with a name. I can hold off. If it helps the snakes then thats great I'll stop.

I just cant imagine being able to do it with out your own car....I'd hate to keep asking someone to give me a ride to the vet...the petstore...shows etc. Not everyone wants you to put snakes and/or rats in there car lol.

Alright, were not so much worried about you going broke...ticking you parents off....or burning out young, were all worried about the animals you will have. You need to make sure before you get each animal you have proper housing for them, make sure you have a vet. all ready to go incase you need them etc.

I am doing this all for the animals. I will drop this whole idea if it makes the animals happy.

Im really excited!! I need to start practicing my one word posts that are to the point but short.:P
justin, this is your first post in this thread. you are asking for tips to get started. you are asking for organization, selling and photo taking tips.
that is not the post of someone who's a few years away from breeding snakes. this is the kind of post someone makes who has grown up their snakes... has a female or 3 who are ready to get together with their male(s) and they want some tips on how to sell their babies.
so when everyone is saying, "whoa there cowboy, slip on your flip flops and take a breath!" - they are saying this because from all the posts you've made in this forum you don't sound super informed - you sound young and like you still have heaps to learn.
i don't think anyone is trying to be mean or hurtful to ya... we are just worried that you are biting off more than you can chew and since you are talking about living creatures... we don't want your snakes to suffer due to lack of funds.
i know that if all of our snakes got RI and we had to treat them all... it would be tough to afford that... so i can't even imagine how a 13 yr old would be able to afford it. your parents have probably agreed to this without really being informed either. perhaps invite them to join the forum... to post and learn, so they can be "informed partners" in your business ;)

Re: Im getting there....
Justin as I was typing in a "college situation" related thread, i thought about something, and it is something you need to think about before dropping thousands of dollars.
Ball Pythons may or may not be what you want to do for the rest of your life...but when you get out of high school, don't get in that mind set "well i'm a ball python breeder, i don't need college!"....you may regret that decision.
If you make the decision to go to college and get a degree, say in business management so you can maximize the potential of your company, then you will more than likely have to move at some point in time, and have to deal with roommates, or a landlord that does not allow reptiles of any sort. Sure you can sneak them in, but with racks and racks of snakes and rodents, you are not going to keep that on the down low. your roommates are going to bicker about that rodent smell in your room.
Just keep in mind that one day you'll be out on your own, without the support of your parents. The more snakes you have, the more difficult it will be. I suppose you could get an early jump on things and when it comes time to cross that bridge, sell a majority of what you have and put that money towards college expenses.
college is a few years a way, but don't think that because it's far away, you don't have to deal with it. it's better to think ahead and come up with a good solid plan than to do things day by day. I'm not doubting your abilities, just trying to get you to open your eyes and think before jumping

I know your all trying to help! I really appresiate(sp) it. I was asking thoughs so I can learn how to do it and have plenty of practice. I have not grown up snakes. I thin kIll take my signature down and wait untill I actualy have snakes to sell.

Justin, I to agree with Nathan...we have lived in places that were strict on there no-pet polocies, and we didnt live in dorm rooms either...these were Condo's in Boca Raton and Apartments over here in SW Florida, thnk about how hard it is to get a place that will allow a large amount of pets....especially reptiles. We couldnt keep ours in our Apartment because we had pest control that came in while we were gone, so even if we hid them..they sprayed there crap every where. We could of loaded them up and left, but that would run the chance of being busted leaving with them and bringing them back.
Most places have a limit (our condo was no-pets period..) our apartment was 2 cats and 1 dog under 40 pounds...there was a $300 fee per animal we owned...there were no more then that allowed...no exceptions!
You might think it's easy to find a place that does allow any amount of pets but in our area...its not. The only way we own 3 cats, 2 dogs and 6 snakes is because we own our home.
Just think...think..think...I think its great you have dreams...thats what keeps us going...gives yo something to live for.
But work your way up, you dont want to rush into things now...ruin a deal or get a bad reputation in the buisness and be marked for life...

We have thought about college. I AM going to college. Football or not. I don't want this to be my occupation. I want to be able to breed snakes for fun! I am going to go to a college in the state so I will be close to home. My snakes will stay at home. I will not be taking an animal to college there will be lack of peopel around them. At home my parents will be there, I am educationing my parents and brother.

but when you go to college you're not going to put it off on them, right? will you live at home near the college? or is college an hour away and you'll live in the dorms. gas aint cheap...it sucks driving an hour just to feed a snake. i know this from experience.

When your parents finally get you and your brother out of there house there going to want to have there own fun, and retire I'm sure.
Do you think they honostly want to be snake breeders for you while your away? Thats rude I think, I couldnt imagine pawning my pets on someone else because I rushed into things.

Re: Im getting there....
I never said they would breed them. They would do just what I do now with my snakes. I take care of mine. I also have a dog. Is it rude that they bought the dog for me and they offerd to take care of him when I go to college? They also paird for one of the snakes. Is that rude casue they offerd? We thoguht about this last year when I was going to get a snake. What are we going to do about college. They offerd to take care of them. I dont think its rude that they will take care of them willingly. I will never take my parents for granite(sp) I would prefer they didnt take care of them. But they wanted to give me a snake and they new what was coming.

You just did what you said you wouldnt do!!!!
I to double post some times, but not all the time.
I just think my family would be ticked if I had animals that I left for them to take care of.
I dont know how your doing things now, and if you decide to breed you'll want to use a tub/rack style house for them...forget this tank stuff. But do you break them down and clean them each week? I couldnt imagine making my folks do that for me...I'd have to pay them big time.
