Re: Conflicting Interests?
Most of my hobbies aren't too expensive, and snakes are probably the priciest for me:
Snakes and other animals
Embroidery
My stuffed animal collection (second most $$ since I only collect realistic ones)
My partner/BF has the pricier hobby...but since it's his eventual profession I don't say much: Video Games. He wishes to be a designer, so he rents/buys many games to play, evaluate, and test out. :) We have a PS2 and an XBOX 360 elite as well as a top of the line design/gaming computer(his) and a very good quality game computer(mine).
The money for these interests is mostly saved/earned. I save up in a special 'critter' account for any vet visits, EQ, or critter food, and he earns 'game credits' by helping me out with various tasks. :)

Re: Conflicting Interests?
I do SCA, so it's a lot of garb, plus armor and weapons for SCA fighting, and I have some swords, but only real functionals, no replica, or wall hangers. Some are hand forged by people who are re-creating the styles and methods of certain time periods.
I also have guns.. so mostly ammo there.
And having 7 dogs, 4 cats, and 2 blackthroats, and 2 tegus.. there's a lot of food, vet, time invested there.
Now I'm also doing wheel thrown pottery, and hoping to begin tilework. Luckily, I got about a ton(literally, nearly 2000 lbs) of clay for free, only have to recycle it. That's a LOT of time and work.

I find that my interests tend to go through phases and I tend to do one more than the rest for a period of time and then find something new

WOOHOO!! Another SCAer! I used to be in it, since I was 4, but haven't been able to do anything lately because I can't drive and lost all the contacts that could. :( I miss it...and I still have a few outfits that fit me, just in case. :) I used to do archery, fencing, Embroidery, singing...all that fun stuff.
We collect swords as well...but only when we have the seriously extra money to pay for them.

Re: Conflicting Interests?
Yea... I have quite a few...
Starting my breeding collection
Growing chilies...just habaneros for now..both hydroponically and in soil..making the lights and systems for em get pretty expensive
Distillation. Copper is expensive!
Cars - My gtp is a money pit. No joke.
Making everything I have a mild interest in.
CB's
BIKING! - both road and mountain - Everything is so dang expensive!
That's a lot to obsess over, all at the same time, when you are utterly broke. So to answer your question on how I cope when I don't have enough money for them all: I just research and design them, hoping to some day actually follow through on them, lol.

I feel you there. I can't count the amount of times I've been sitting at my computer, BP selected at the online checkout at a breeder's website, staring at my credit card. I've even entered all my information, and had my mouse hovering over the "confirm order" button, but I haven't let it get the best of me yet. Very hard to resist though.
I'm going to wait and make sure I can keep my first BP happy and healthy for a year before buying another. When the time comes to invest $200-$800 for a morph I'll be in a better position to care for it.

Re: Conflicting Interests?
My hobbies go great together. Snakes and Motorcycles. I just wrap a snake around my neck and hit the interstate. By balls get all excited while traveling at 150mph.

No real conflict of intrest for me.

Re: Conflicting Interests?
My snakes and saltwater fish can conflict because they're both expensive and time consuming, but I manage. The fish are relatively cheap to care for when I am not upgrading equipment or buying a new fish, just like the snakes I guess.
My other big hobby is art, but that isn't expensive. It actually helps me pay for the snakes and tank.
