Most of us may have gone on to focus on genetics of the animals or the "whys" of any aspect of breeding. Grading yourself this way is not having a swelled head but knowing what you are capable of in the here and now.
If the comparison is to a breeder that's been in the game longer; if we are to match up against another PRO breeder, our estimation of ourselves would be reduced by say..Kara? How would I rate myself compared to her...of course, I am a NOVICE.
BUT when we are making our own milestones, marking our own progress, only we know where we are compared to where we began, and it shows by how we respond to inquiries on breeding, genetics. etc.
Hope this helped.
Thank you. That's what I was thinking when I chose.

Re: How would you rate your bp/reptile knowledge level?
I rated based on what I know that I've learned on the proper keeping and care of the individual species which I keep. If we're talking general reptile knowledge that goes WAY down. I've been devouring every bit of info I can get my hands on for the last couple years regarding BPs, corns, kings and most recently hognoses and feel that I have a fairly good handle on what I need to know in order to keep healthy happy snakes.
However, if you were to ask me anything but the most basic questions on keeping lizards or turtles I would be totally lost!

Re: How would you rate your bp/reptile knowledge level?
obviously very few of us at BPN(if any in fact) are even vets qualified to work with reptiles, and I think that alone is something to consider when judging your expertise.
I'm often surprised though how little the "average" person, or even the "average well-educated" person knows about reptiles.
I always get all the reptile Qs correct and faster than just about all contestants on jeopardy(not the best standard to judge things on, but at least you know you are "competing" with knowledgable people!), but the contestants hardly ever get any, on top of being what I would consider extremely easy questions. Totally my favorite category.. except possibly dinosaurs :-P

Anyone.....anyone at all?

Re: How would you rate your bp/reptile knowledge level?
I put average. I read everything I can get my hands on to feel that I am knowledgable (for he snakes' benefit). I am very comfortable handling my animals, and feel they are healthy, but have not bred any of them yet. We have 5 different species of snakes too. But I feel like there is still a LOT to learn and experience! Good thread!

I agree, and think that this poll should be more specific in what way your looking at your knowledge.
In my progression of how much I have learned and how much I feel I can give to other people, I am much more advanced then when I first started.
However, when it comes to how much I have yet to learn, how much I know I need to experience, I would be very much a beginner, as this is indeed the beginning of many of our long journeys.
I would consider, a true professional, to be a herp veterinarian with multiple snakes at home and experience not just in the class room, but with breeding and keeping as well on a large scale.
That to me, is a rare professional of reptiles.

I put average, You're always learning something new
1.1 normal
0.1 pastel

Re: How would you rate your bp/reptile knowledge level?
can someone really be advanced at another species if they are just avg at their own?

I put advanced. Definitely above average, but not pro or expert.
