Re: College Students Unite!!!
The rent is due, as is the power bill. Auto insurance actually went down, but we added two drivers this year so it really went up. Food is over rated, who needs to eat more than once a day? I got new shoes 2 years ago and they still work just fine. Of course new cleats and sports equipment for the younguns cost more than I've ever spent on just plain shoes, but what can you do? I can skip lunch but you can't play soccer barefooted. I found a deal on cell phone rates, but had to buy new phones when I switched companies.
But hey, it could be worse.
I could be a student, living in a dorm, having food prepared by semi-sapient automatons which in no way demeans the food, having no real responsibilities other than consuming mass quantities when appropriate and doing well on my exams. Of course that means I must not only study but retain what I study long enough to regurgitate it in sufficient quantities to prove that I actually know what I'm repeating which, while difficult, is no where near the difficulty level of going to work every damn day knowing that if I call in sick or just skip there will be no pay for the day.
Perspective. And point of view.
I'm not knocking any of you students, just trying to glue enough brain cells together to remember what it was like when I was you.
Don't be me.
Graduate.

Re: College Students Unite!!!
I'm not gonna lie Wilomn..the food here at U of South Carolina isn't half bad...and with tuition like it is now my parents can't afford to give me any money even with my scholarships so I work as well.

Re: College Students Unite!!!
and the part about regurgitation on exams...well...that part is ridiculously true...sounds like you've been here done this and probably have a few t-shirts.

Re: College Students Unite!!!
Just saw this topic, so great.
**Rant**
I'm taking a woman's studies class, and sorry to feminists, I'm really starting to detest anything that has to do with the topic. I can understand presenting the material for the class in a bias-free manner leaving room for the personal opinions; but this woman is literally failing me because I do not agree with her views. I go above and beyond writing assignment requirements and answer topic questions with logical arguments and she gives me flat ZEROS. I went to speak with her at office hours and she said "yes I'm aware I'm failing you" and when I ask to try and make up assignments she simply says "no my grade is final." I mean honestly, this women claims that the number of bathrooms on my campus is sexist...why? Because it takes women longer to use the bathroom, hence long lines. So the makers of buildings need to be aware of this and make more bathrooms. COME ON. Getting worked up now. Finals suck.
...oh by the way, I'm a women.
**End Rant**

Wilomn, you're the best. I love everything you post, seriously.
One thing I learned this semester: I am never taking a physical chem course again. But it's almost done... just a few more...days... *choke*

Hah, I had some friends who took women's studies freshmen year, and they had a similar experience. Everyone hated it, male and female student alike, so I guess that's equality for you?

Re: College Students Unite!!!
I'm going to be up all night again tonight studying for my foundations final. I've struggled in that class b/c the guy that is teaching is only visiting for the semester. We had a few prof. retire recently in the architecture department, and they are having a hard time filling the positions. The guy we have now knows his stuff, but hasn't taught before that I can tell, it's mostly just chit-chat. *bleh*
I'm done with my calc III final (what a killer...) and astronomy (complete blow off). I was up all night studying for the calc test, went to the test, got out with the aim of going home to eat and sleep, then realized I was supposed to be at work 30 mins. ago!! :O *oops* Luckily my manager also has classes and finals (it's a local pizza place) so she didn't mind much. I've always been very reliable there, so she cuts me a bit of slack when I need it.
As of tomorrow at 11-ish I'm done!! Then I have to go to work, but as of midnight I'm completely done!! Whoo!

Re: College Students Unite!!!
I graduated in june, and let me tell you I feel SOOO glad to be out of school.
Kinda really sucks being unemployed, but I've got a good chunk in savings + help from parents until I get hired. I'm going to be picking up some kind of temporary job soon until something I can make a career out of comes along.
But even with bills, looking for work and other crap I have to deal with "in the real world", it's nice to be able to cook for myself(and not be wasting money on forced meal plans), have my own 2BR apartment, own some herps(no pets other than aquatics allowed in dorms where I went), have time to go to a movie, I get to get a full nights sleep every night.. Bunches of good things to being graduated.
AND I've dropped 10 lbs from 170 to 160, no real exercise, I just eat as much as I want of my own cooking rather than the crap we got fed on campus.
Plus now I'm doing fun adult things like shopping for an engagement ring, decorating my own 7 foot xmas tree(try fitting THAT in the dorm rooms on campus!), having dinner parties w/friends.. It's pretty great!
Of course hardly a week goes by without thinking that it would be so fun to be back at college again.. but I have friends still in undergrad who tell me about their papers and tests and I feel alright again being graduated.

Re: College Students Unite!!!
DONE!!! :carrot::carouse::pinkele::fest:
Free for 5 weeks! Yay! Now I can sew and build and all that stuff I've been putting off during the worst semester of my college career.
Another good note: My BF had a VERY promising interview this morning, and they are now doing the whole background check that means that they probably want to hire him! $10/hr (up from $8 in current Joe job) doing something he'll actually like that helps him toward his game design goals. :D:D
As for the whole college living and food thing... well I wouldn't really know about dorms since I've never lived in one. Instead, I get to live in an apartment where I can have all my snakes, but take the bus to classes which takes half an hour (10 min by car).
Food on and around my campus can be a challenge if you want to eat healthy. Not because there are no options but because the campus is in the middle of downtown Denver: expensive! Sure there are eats on the campus itself...but only the basic student fare of McDs, Taco Hell(err Bell), Subway and the like.
Since I go to school mostly to pay the rent and bills (grants and loans are my half of the income), keeping my financial aid is extremely important. So the killing myself studying for passing and good grades is so I can continue to eat and have a home.
There are times I almost wish I were living in a dorm with the assistance of parents paying tuition...but those are few and far between. :)
I'm just glad to be rid of chemistry!

Re: College Students Unite!!!
I had everything on Monday, and that was a looooonnggg day. Exams for 13 hours with only 2 short breaks. But I felt so relieved once I got everything done. This is the first semester I'm actually going to school for a degree I am interested in, and my first semester I think I'm going to get straight A's. It's about time!
