If you're planning on starting a business either full or part time, please do yourself a favor and put as much into the "business" side as the "animal" side. Take a class (or two or three or four), read books, talk to small business owners ... sales, marketing, advertising, finance, accounting, etc ... are all actually more important than the "animal part" ... and most important ... write up a business plan ... you won't regret it. The animal part is the EASY and fun part ... the rest is real work and it sucks sometimes ... 9 out of 10 business fail in their first three years because the people that started the business had no idea how to run a business. Doesn't matter if you produce a million dollars worth of snakes, if you can't run a business, you've lost before you even started.

Hope this helps and I wish you the best of luck.

I spoke with Adam awhile ago about this and it finally sunk in. The business aspect is very important. Writing out a business plan will put everything into perspective for you. The important thing is to be very conservative. Always figure that you will have less females than males, whatever your final figure is, cut it in half - this is the number that you go by. Good luck -

I'm going to make expense/income charts/spreadsheets to plan out seasons, plan conservatively, build a website, advertise everywhere, take into account that if I have 6 clutches I might only come out with 3 or 4 the first year until I get really good at it etc... and also I'm taking into account the cost of racks, food, increases to power/heat bills likely vet visits and the whole 9. I plan on having my own ASF colony to help keep food costs down and cover all bases as far as meal size, live/ft etc...

I totally understand what you are saying and I have been told that you have to run this like a business or it will fail. The best advice I had about it was that there are breeders and then there are business owners who happen to be breeders and that you need to concentrate on the marketing/accounting/business side of this thing or it'll tank and you'll wind up just spending money to breed instead of making money from breeding.

Hey, at least doing this I might actually use my basically useless Bachelor's degree. I'm an aircraft mechanic but I went and got a BA in poli sci(have business/marketing electives I took so I have a good idea of how it all works on paper) in case I ever wanted to be a pilot since the military paid for it all lol.

I really appreciate all the responses and I am not trying to pretend to know anything about this business other than how it theoretically works until I actually start doing it. I'm just trying to make it known that I'm not going into it with a pair of thick rose colored glasses on and thinking I know everything. I do have a plan and if I stick to it and stay disciplined I can have a decent shot at it working I think.
