Re: Rescue.. Well here we go...
Littleindiangirl,
Not to disclaim your argument, but that's a bad example to support your argument. It was determined that another Alligator killed the snake and the belly burst open during the decomposition process. It wasn't because the prey itme was too big.
And WaRocker,
You really don't need to overfeed in an attempt to "catch up." I have learned first hand that offering an oversized meal can lead to a rediculously long fast.

LOL, well point taken. Last I heard they weren't sure what actually killed the animal.
How's this for another example. My dog would kill himself on dog food if he ever got to a full bag. :P He's tried

Here's more food for thought. What would you consider full? A full to capacity stomach or an adequate meal?
I can technically be full from a sandwich and drink (if my brain kicks in and tells me so), but my stomach can handle the sandwich, the drink, some ice cream, chips, maybe another sandwich, oh and hot yummy frenchfries. I wouldnt feel very good, but my stomach is full to the brim and I'll live to eat another day.
Does it mean it's a good thing to eat that way? ;)
(the dog example was just silly)

correct me if wrong.
So your saying if you eat a smaller meal you get healthier from it?:weirdface
So I ate 2 apples and you ate 1 now your have better health right:confused:

Wow Wow Wow!! I am not trying to over feed to catch up. That would be crazy and wrong. Maybe you should read the post better..

Wow so your dog would sit and eat a whole 40 pound bag in one sitting? Then die?:O
Or you think he would stop if he was full?
If I put 4 pizzas in front of you are you going to eat them all? Then die?:O
Again .. I am not trying to over feed him. He did however take the food and had no problems with it. It will not be his normal diet. Stuffed he is. But I am sure in the wild they never ever eat more than one food in a week huh
Re: Rescue.. Well here we go...
Oh and last before the hate mail comes:mad:
The vet I took him to the day after his HUGE:rolleyes: feeding told me.. "Hey if you have not ate for a long time you to would tend to stuff yourself huh".
He knew it was not a thing I was tending to keep happening. But he said it was to be expected and not a big deal.:rage:

I think you're trying to do the right thing for these snakes (and that is awesome!)
but... you moved the male after feeding him a large meal? and to go to the -vet?- i wouldnt do that very often. Its probably very very stressful for the snake. The times my girl has gone to the vet its been well before or well after a feeding, even if it means shes hungry for a few days. I hope he doesnt regurge for you.
The reason people give rescues smaller meals is because normally you dont know how well they've been feeding, what they've been fed, etc. (even if the previous owner says one thing, they obvously weren't taking good care of the animal so you probably shouldnt trust what they have to say anyway). The snakes would be stressed and underfed. they may have regurged previously or are eating small prey items. you dont want to shock their systems by giving them a large item and having them really have to work it down. working up to an appropriate sized prey item from a small one is how its done (i think). Ive had to coach people through this but i've never had rescues myself ( yet, i hope to do rescues when i've got the room).
People arent attacking you, they, like you, just want whats best for the snake and for it to make a happy, healthy recovery.
best of luck with them!

Apples??? what????
my anatomy is completely different than a ball python.
im saying it is much easier for a SNAKE:snake: to digest a smaller meal (ex. 1 small rat per week) VS. a large meal (ex. 1 medium rat followed by a small rat) Less stress on the snake = happy snake.
