You've just outlined the risks that many breeders have taken over the past couple of decades in order to import, establish & produce morphs that are now considered "commonplace" in the hobby, regardless of species. If you knew how much money in the grand scheme of things has been LOST on snakes that were imported & didn't make it for whatever reason, or ended up being a deal gone wrong, or didn't pan out due to a number of factors, well buddy, you'd probably laugh yourself to death. Isn't it great that healthy, captive born & bred animals are now available for folks who do decide that they want to work with investment-quality reptiles?
If you don't want to stick your neck out, that's fine. But don't knock those who do simply because they can & will. We all have different things that we like and dislike, different perspectives & different values to some extent. If we start to belittle each other for those differences instead of learning to respect them, we're undermining what a fantastic hobby this can really be. It's a lot more fun to have a good, earnest debate rather than to "laugh in (someone's) face," and come across sounding like a jerk, whether you intended to or not.
There are a LOT of snakes out there, truly something for everyone. Not to mention lizards, amphibians, you name it. Just the mere fact that we have so many options & so many resources available is worth way more than $30k. Add to that all of the fantastic people that you can get to know in this hobby, and I'd go as far as to say you'd be hard-pressed to put a price on it.
Just my $.02.

Re: 30,000 Dollars
Think about it this way, if the snake does reproduce and prove-out, within a couple years there will be DOZENS of them on the market for several thousand a peice. The potential value of such a snake is far greater than $30,000. I personnally do not have the time/place/energy to put into such a project (and these big breeders have several of these projects all going on at once), however I have enormous respect for those that do. Because of their work, they have made it possible for people to own a unique animal that appeals to them more rather than everyone having a "normal" (even though my favorite BP to look at is my own "normal").

Re: 30,000 Dollars
i'll admit im willing to pay a couple hundred dollars for a BP morph, but spending several thousand dollars on one snake....maybe,maybe not.
but it's up to the keeper to decide that.

Re: 30,000 Dollars
You all have to understand that money is relative based upon someone's salary. People think spending $10,000 on a car is a huge investment, some people see a $100,000 car as a small investment, hell even the $1,000,000 Bugatti Veyron is purchased by people who that million doesn't even dent their wallets.
So when someone goes to buy a $50,000 snake (unless for breeding purposes), it is for exclusivity and I'm sure that money is not that person's primary concern. So if they want something that most people don't have, well there you go, they can purchase it because when someone makes even 6-digit earnings over their life, $50,000 is still not that much.

Re: 30,000 Dollars
There are two ways to look at this issue.
1. Would I pay 30K for a snake, be it for breeding or just to have it?
I answer that question with a deffinite no. I personally would never invest that type of money in an animal, I am not comfortable with the risk and I would rather own investments then a snake that can die, not produce or may produce but the market for what it produces will be falling. I have to say if I wanted to spend the money, I do have it so it is not a question for me about ability but about what I would be willing to do with my money. Any of you may have different reasons for a no or a yes answer to this question, it is personal and no one owes anyone an explaination for their answer be it a yes, no or even a may be.
2. Is it acceptable for anyone to pay 30k or more for a snake?
Now everyone is entitled to their opinion but mine is this. If you think it is wrong to spend your own money, the way you want on what you want, you might be happier in say Cuba or some other vestage of Communist Socialism, (I hear Russia is making a real come back). I am glad people are willing to spend the money and do the work with snakes to produce new animals and I like that if I wait say 10 years many 30K animals will be available for say 200 because people that will make the investment and do the work will be successful.
This animal in particular is a Dwarf version of a Retic. That is great as Dwarfs are the future for Burms and Retics in my opinion. Some day Retics and Burms that stay under ten feet will become common, I predict males that stay under 7 will be common and affordable at some point.
This will open up the ability to keep Burms and Retics to the average herper and it will be people that are willing to spend big bucks and work with all these new animals that will make it happen.
I would love a dwarf retic or burm! I personally won't pay 700 bucks for one like you can get some for now. What can I say I cap my personal spend at about 300-400 for something I really want and spend sub 100 on most stuff. Those are my limits though and I have a lot of animals today that were thousands of dollars say 20 years ago and I owe that ability to those willing to do the work and spend the bucks. So to those who are willing and able, I say thank you. To any that bash them I would remind you of a saying,
