I know when my tarantula shed she sheds her sex organs and becomes virginal once more as thats the best way to sex them if you have access to a shed.

Are they noticeable on the shed skin? because if they are wouldn't this be used as sex determination?

Very interesting!!! Glad you got an answer.

Now call your "herp vet" back up and let her know that she is... a little off but next time she'll now know. ;)

I wonder if you vet is confusing snake behaviour with green iguana behaviour. A friend of mine that does iggy rescue has done a lot of reading on some theories that male iggy's are reactive to hormonal changes in their female keepers and have shown heightened aggression during certain times in the woman's cycle. Sexually mature male iggy's will do a grab, bite type behaviour during attempts to mate and will do that with humans if a receptive female iggy isn't present. The more you try to push them away the more aggressive they can get. My friend wonders though if it's unrelated to a breeding reaction as much as it's just "the big dumb human's scent is different...I think I shall bite it!" LOL

I wonder if your vet just made the leap from "well if an iggy can react, maybe a snake can too" sort of thing.

    Ok,

He shed. I went and cut the shed apart to get a good pic - not a sign of peens.

Now I know he's a male cos he's a daddy.I can see where his spurs were and can understand there being some minor abrasions at the point the shed pulls away from the body but I wanted to see shed peens dammit.

Any one else wanna chip in on this?

And before anyone asks the black stuff is damp peat from the wetbox and the reason its not a good pic is cos I'm a wally :P
