Personally, I do not name my snakes. However, I feel that people name their snakes because they consider them "pets" or part of their family. In a way it's almost anthropomorphizing the animals. I do not see my snakes as pets therefore I do not name them. I do not name my fish either for the same reason. I do consider my cats pets though and they have names. At some point in the process of keeping snakes, or anything, the number of individuals gets too high and the whole scheme of things turn from pets to projects. That being said, show me a rancher that has names for everyone of his cattle.

Re: Why do we name our snakes?
Ive never named any reptile or t personally, though I've owned several with names given to them by others. Not a big deal to me if they can't respond when called but it seems easier for others to connect with/accept them when they have a name.

For the lulz. ( <-This guy has a python named Boots, after all.)

It gives the snake a sense of individuality to us, in addition. Instead of making them another fish in the tank, it could help us remember certain individual personality associations with them. Also, it's fun. Who doesn't want a pet serpent named something like Smaug or Godzilla? Come on now.

I've named a few of my snakes over the years. In my experience, the ones I'm more attached to personally get names. Also, if you've ever done educational shows for children you'll know there are 4 questions that are almost always asked.

    1) Does it bite?
    2) Where does it poop?
    3) Is it a boy or a girl?
    4) What's it's name?

I got tired of kids looking at me like I'm an idiot when I answered the last one wrong.

I am a cop out. I call My Mojo Spider: Mo, Ultramel Corn Snake: Mel, Bloodred Ghost Corn: Ghosty

The reason, kids like names for things, they name dolls....

I personally don't care, but telling the kids to check on The Mojave Spider, My son will get wide eyed and go run to the cage, but everyone else in the house gives me a dumb look... I can say check on Mo and they all know what I am asking...

I guess on a human level it would be the same as saying "Hey Purple Black Het Albino" to a person, or "Hey Pastey White Red Back"....

    Names are easier.

when looking into snakes and deciding on a bp, i had to keep reminding myself that a snake is a snake, and it's not going to be like having dogs or guinea pigs (i had a guinea pig that responded to her name--very smart girl!) or rabbits, etc. she didn't have a name for a few weeks but i kept referring to her as "snakey" to all my friends and that sounded kind of dumb. i ended up wanting to give her a name, because to me (at least) all animals have souls and i think they deserve a name.. LOL so i named her Struggles. to each their own, i guess? heheh

I have boas and naming definitely reminds me which ones are gonna try to take my face off when I open their tub. The worst is Wolverine but I think I should have just named him Demon. Seriously. Or Satan. But, we have a comic book thing going with the breeders. The babies get letter/number combinations though. I keep horses and name them also. They couldn't care less what you call them. My cat Frankenstine almost always comes when called.
