Agreed, there are a lot of places where regulations are just overbearing. I think I have 1 gun that is legal in California with all their regulations on high capacity mags, drop regulations, etc etc.
Those are some nice looking guns! While I put a good bit of bells and whistles on mine, it is set up for long range with quick change to close range (STS magnifier does this part excellent). It can be slightly heavy thanks to the al. quad rail, and the ACS stock, but well worth it for the balance and stability it offers.
Again with home defense a lot of people actual rec. shotgun, especially if you do not have enough time to get to the range and practice your pistol. As for as people reacting under stress and not being able to get a shot off, MOST of the time you do not need to even get a shot off, guns themselves provide a deterrent. You know why they never have their guns loaded in the movies? The sound of them loading is terrifying. However, in real life retrospect, you should always have it ready for action!
None the less, for sport or protection, we all have our 2nd amendment rights

And now non-restricted firearms do not have to be registered. Only bad thing about pistols is that you have to have a form to take them out side of your house.
and certain rifle have to have their mags pinned to 5 rounds.
I am going to be getting the ISSC MK22 .22 Rifle. Yes its a .22 (shoots .22LR's ) but it is a semi-auto AR and its mags are either 10 or 22 rounds. As far as I am concerned 10 or 22 .22 rounds could easily drop some one fast. Especially with how fast this gun can shoot.
That and there isnt really any restrictions on shot guns.
If you actually spend the time reading up on the rules and regulations its actually not that hard to own any firearm in Canada!

As far as going with a non-standard AR for your first, I thought about going this route, was actually about to go pick up a Bushmaster (Remington) ACR. . . but after some discussion, I was highly urged to just go with a standard AR15 and then modify it as I can. AR15 is a tried and trusted base platform and you will always be able to find parts for even the smallest of things. Keep that in mind when you look at stuff like the Mk22 you may not be able to find parts quite as easy, thus taking your primary arms out of service.

Great weapons. I am a fan of my Springfield XDM 9mil. i shoot fiocchi 147 grain jhp out of it and it has more than enough power to make someone regret coming thru my door. it is my carry weapon. my fiance carries a ruger sr/22 as her carry weapon. As was said earlier it is not what u use its how accurate u are and under stress most people lose presence of mind to go thru proper controll for a follow up shot. i deployed to iraq in 2010 and even trained soldiers get giddy and miss a step when thier weapon jammed. But once again thank you for this post great to see firearm enthusiasts on here.

I do love the XD (use to carry an XD40, switched to a baby glock, then went the new XDs .45). My only issue has been the trigger, it's quite heavy for a defense carry IMO, but it does aid in allowing us to NOT pull the trigger ahead of time. My PPQ has a 1/10th trigger reset and a VERY light trigger pull. The XD seems to be about 6lb trigger pull with a lot of travel to get there. Good for some things I suppose, but I still love a smooth and light trigger.
