Well, there are a few "wise men" on here that have been using it for, I think, 30+ years. I decided to trust them and put all 4 of my corns on it. They have not had any problems yet. And they look like they like it more than newspaper. I buy big bags of pine for $6 while the same amount of aspen is $15. I think I've been using it for 3 months now. I don't remember exactly. I have hatchlings, sub-adult, and adult on it and they are all fine.

Fair enough, I've always been too nervous to try it, but I'm glad your guys are doing well on it. I get my aspen in a giant 30 lb bag from my local reptile store for about $40, it lasts ages at that size.

I use shredded aspen currently. I have and occasionally use unprinted newspaper. If you want to use this, just go to your local paper and ask them for it. Usually free or a couple of bucks for a giant roll. Also, you can get corrugated craft paper from U-line.com and it has little dimples in the paper that help keep fecal material from spreading and still gives the snake something to rub against when shedding.

Aspen for me. It looks pleasing in my viv tank but, am thinking of switching to paper towels once my snake tubs are completed.

I have used Aspen, Pine, Cypress Mulch, indoor/outdoor carpet, sand, sphagnum moss, potting soil and probably a few others I can't think of right now. I always end up coming back to plain old unprinted newspaper. It's just easier to clean and not as messy. 'spot cleaning' is just another way of saying that your cages are dirty in places that you can't see.

I use newspaper. Simple and easy to clean. I use aspen for trouble eating hatchlings.

I used to use (and love cypress) because it helps so much with humidity. I recently switched to using paper products so that I can feed all of my ball pythons in their enclosures without worrying that they'll ingest substrate. I've tried newspaper and brown shipping paper rolls. The shipping paper is nicer, but isn't free like newspaper. Then again, I've only gone through a single $5 roll in about 3 months with my 5 ball pythons. So the cost is minimal. My only gripe is that most of them have taken to going under the paper rather than using their hides. Kind of defeats the purpose. =)

We strictly had everyone on paper for a long time until we got some problem feeders, we switched them to aspen and we've seen a marked improvement. I think it has to do with feeling secure, with loose aspen they can burrow and mold it to whatever makes them content (my pastel makes the same exact burrow pattern every time).

On the other hand there are some that just don't seem to care, and I have a few that I've switched to aspen just for uniformity's sake even though they'd be happy with even sandpaper lol.
