Well I can sell my used underwear for $2000 dollars, doesn't mean people should or will buy them ...
So, do you think anytime in the near future albino ball pythons will get cheaper?
I would truely love to own one, but to do so I'd have to miss two rent payments, my albino and I would be living on the street.
Why do people pay such insane prices, we should all stike until prices are lowered!
-
LoL, maybe new undies? They might get cheaper, but we'll just have to wait it out until it does. I know what you mean, I could sell my car and that might be one payment...and then I would have to have 15 jobs and then maybe I could afford one... :)
-
I know what ya mean, I love albinos but I could never afford one, I also love Pieds but also can't afford those. :(

Exactly the majority of the snake lovers like us can't afford one of those beautiful snakes.
If the beeders truely loved the snakes, they wouldn't be selling them for profit.
Yet alone such a gigantic profit that true snake lovers can't afford to buy.

You're out of your mind if you don't think we truly love these animals. You have no idea the amount of work that goes into keeping herps on a large scale. We're very lucky that some of these are investment-quality animals - much like a show dog or a show horse, and that we're able to make a living doing what we love - raising reptiles. If you think that breeders make HUGE profit margins, you're absolutely WRONG. There is a lot of overhead that goes into keeping this many animals, paying employees, utilities, caging, feeding etc. Prices will eventually come down - that is how supply and demand works. In the mean time, prices are high because it takes a lot of risk to import & develop new bloodlines & projects, and there are quite a few folks out there who view these not only as awesome animals to work with, but an investment opportunity as well.

I dont understand why an albino burmese costs $200 and an albino ball costs $2000, I think the only reason they sell them for so much is because theres actually people insane enough to pay the price, I think we should all go on strike and not buy morphs till the prices are lowered! :D
Ok...so are you also going to go on strike until the price of the 52" plasma TV isn't $3000? I mean, a regular rear-projection 52" TV is only $1200, so the folks with the plasma technology just must be greedy, right?
What about the Mercedes SL600 Roadster? Heck, I'd love to have one of those, but am not about to pay $128,220.00 for it. In fact, I may even go on strike - I'm sure Mercedes-Benz is really going to suffer for the lack of me (and several other people, I'd bet) not buying their cars. Right?
WRONG.
It's partially about supply and demand. Albino Burms have been on the market for almost 2 decades. These snakes are very easy to breed & throw HUGE clutches of eggs - sometimes 80 or more. So it's pretty darn easy to create a supply that meets the demand for these animals. In fact, there's not a giant demand for 20' snakes that cost a fortune to house & feed - check your local SPCA or reptile rescue & you're sure to find at least a couple.
Albino balls haven't been in the herp trade nearly as long as albino Burms. Ball pythons average 4-5 eggs a clutch & aren't quite as easy to breed as Burmese pythons. There is also a HUGE demand for albino balls - they're beautiful, popular, easy to keep, did I mention beautiful (?), and a perfect and manageable size for most people. Right now, there aren't as many albino balls being produced as there are people who want one - hence the price remains high. In a few years, the price will come down - I mean hey, it's already come down from $10,000 a few years ago.
If you want something new & different & cool, earn it. Don't sit around & gripe and say the pricing is unfair - that just looks like sour grapes.

Yes, well said Kara. And I look forward very much to the day I can afford a nice bp morph (someday after I pay off my loans for my master's program) and I know it will be worth every penny.

A lot of people don't realize the investment that goes into producing these beautiful animals. There's a lot more to it than putting a couple of cool-looking snakes that you happen to have lying around into the same enclosure and ending up with babies several months down the road.

You can't come pair a SL600 roadster to an Albino Ball, the only difference between my ball and yours is ... COLOR -
Its like saying my standard black SL600 is $20,000 and your nice yellow one is $128,000 ... My ball python can perform just as well as yours ... only difference is COLOR!
Theres plenty of Albino Ball Pythons produced, I'm even seeing them in local reptile pet shops, and I know I can find plenty of sellers "TRYING" to sell off their albinos for 2k ...
I'm not trying to start a flame war, just think its really unfair that they're priced so high ...
And if we did go on strike and stop buying till prices are lowered, I'm sure you would lower them ... What happends to all the left over items stores can't sell off? THEY GO ON DISCOUNT! *evil laugh* ... have I striked long enough for you to donate me an albino ball yet?
Anyways its cool that you actually take the time to breed them at all, I know its a hard job, but hopefully when prices are lowered near the $500 range, I'll be the first in line!
Oh and I have a question for you, are the snakes you breed ... inbreeds? For example do you breed father to sister, does it affect the snakes in anyway if you do?
