Re: Nasty Food!
the worst thing i ever ate has to go to sushi

Sushi rocks! My worst would be liver.

Worst here was when we moved into a crappy old apartment complex and my mom found a rusty old can of beef in the basement. It had a white label, an outline of a cow, and the word "BEEF" in all caps below it. She brought it up and was excited about it, and we thought she was kidding. When we came home from school a couple days later, she had made hamburger helper. I tasted it and realized what she used. My sister didn't. She ate a plate full, then told my mom it tasted funny and was really stringy. My mom said, "That's because I used the beef I found in the basement!" Needless to say, she was pissed. :hungry:
It's not really the taste, but the idea of it more than anything. That can was years and years old.

I have to agree with the raw squid that has to be the worst. I compared the texture to chewing on an old tire innertube with a horrible fishy taste to go with it.
The 2nd worst was a sword fish caserole I tried. I am just not much for strong fishy tastes.

You thought swordfish tasted like fish?! Maybe it was because of what it was in. Other fish in it maybe? Swordfish steaks are an incredibly firm white meat that (in my opinion) does not taste like fish at all.
Anyway. My nastiest food ever tried was liver. I like a lot of things but I just can't stomach the taste of liver. I tried. Can't do it. Yuck.

My gran fed me sheeps liver once, by telling me it was a piece of steak, I took one bite and back it cam, straight onto the kitchen table...she was disssapoint, lol!
Another thing I can't stand the thought of is Tripe...Just the smell makes me run a mile, and when you see it at the butcher, damn that stuff is terrible, especially the Black Tripe that wasn't cleaned yet.
But people over here eat crazy stuff, Mopane Worms, Sheep/Pig Head, and then of course, there are certain people that work at Game Reserves that find it funny to get the tourists to eat Green Eggs, or Black Eggs, depends on what game lodge you visit. These little gems are chicken eggs, that are put under a pile of Manure(Poop), and left for a certain time period. When you crack them open, the yolk is black. I believe they are boiled first, before being put under the poop. The game guides/Professional Hunters think they are some sort of delicacy!!!

Whoever gave you the skate butchered it wrong then. You have to kill the skate as soon as you catch it, or like you said, it will smell and taste like piss.
I've caught and butchered my own fresh skate, and if you put it on ice for about 10 minutes live, then stab it in the brain and immediately filet it, it tastes amazing. It's got loads of texture, and way better tasting than plain ole fish!

Have you had shark steaks? Swordfish steaks are very similar. They are great grilled with lemon and garlic. Since it is a fish eating fish, that swims in cold saltwater, they shouldn't have a dirty or fishy flavor. They must have put some other fish in that dish or put other parts of the swordfish that you wouldn't normally eat in it.
You really only want the fillets. Try it sometime. Cook it like you would shark or tuna steaks on the grill. Sear and blacken both sides a few minutes but don't over do it and dry it out. mmmmmm :)

There is a definite trick to preparing shark and skate, and starts from when you catch it. Because sharks and skates have a lot of ammonia in their system you need to get this out, or it can smell like pee, and it's also not great for you. Likewise with a shark, they have mercury in their belly meat, so this should be discarded.
The best thing to do, is when you catch a shark and decide to eat it, you need to bleed it out, to get rid of the ammonia and the mercury. The best thing to do is to make a cut near the tail and start the bleeding, then bury it in the beach sand so that the head points up and the tail down, that way it will bleed out nicely.
When you fillet it, take only the big triangle shaped fillets of it's back, they look like a big piece of pork neck or pork fillet, and they run down it's back and sides, discard the belly.
When you get them home, if you want them to be extra tender and odor free, soak them over night in milk. This will neutralize any remaining amonia smell. The flesh of a Black Tip or a small grey shark makes great eating. Cut them up into steaks, season nicely and grill them, you'll find normal fish to be very boring.
Same with skate wings, bleed the skate out, skin them, soak over night in milk, spice them, and then you can pan fry them or even bake them, they taste amazing!!! A plus point on sharks and skates is that they are a bit easier to skin than fish, especially sharks that have a tough skin!!
