We are. I'm sick and tired of the commercialized hype of the holidays, plus add your reason, the economic times.
We bought a house this year (sure the ugliest thing you ever set eyes on) and that's our gift to ourselves. We don't have any family worth visiting, so I'll fry something up on the grill (no stove yet) and we'll enjoy a STRESS FREE Christmas!
Oh, and hubby is a manager at a grocery store, and he said they were dead as can be also on BF lol.

I feel the same way. Hubby and I have talked about, when we have kids, not doing the whole crapload-o-stuff-from-China deal. I like the idea of giving them toys or whatever they want on their birthdays, but making a rule of one handmade gift for each person on Yule. I've forgotten almost all of my major Xmas presents I got as a kid, but I'd sure love to have something that my brother or sister made for me now that I'm older. Anything to get away from the "What did I get??" mentality, and put more emphasis on family.

I can certainly appreciate hand-made gifts but when I was growing up Birthdays and X-mas was the only time my brother and I got toys/video games, period. So I always looked forward to seeing if I got what I asked for on X-mas, wasn't a big deal if I didn't get exactly what I asked for cause I always got stuff I liked.
As I've gotten older the idea of receiving gifts has shifted more towards giving them but I don't see anything wrong with "commercialization", but I don't think anyone should expect gifts. It's not a gift if you have to give it.

Re: Black friday
I love buying gifts for everyone. Its my favorite thing to do....finding just the right thing they will love!!! During Christmas one of my favorite things is seeing my sons face when he walks downstairs to the tree. We NEVER put anything out until the Christmas Eve. He still believes in Santa and we take great strides to keep it that way. I probably only have 1 year left of it. :tears::tears: I guess I just LOVE the magic of the whole thing.
My hubby and I do black friday...we do save a bit and it is fun to add up the savings when we get home. But really we just have fun doing it. We have so many crazy stories when it is all over. It truly is quite the crack up...ppl are so serious about it.
I do have to say..my son is an only child and he is very spoiled!! But with that being said...I was an only child and very spoiled. I think that you can spoil your children but teach them NOT to expect everything and to have good citizenship, and lastly...appreciate everything that you have and that you are blessed to have those things. You can loose everything and that is ok...as long as you have love and each other. We regularly donate and help out others so that he learns...(which is hard to teach kids) that some don't have anything....not even a book.
Ok...wow...I just wrote a book..sorry

Re: Black friday
Well, I hate crowds. Any place where it is shoulder to shoulder people. Even a restaraunt thats packed with no where left to sit is too much for me. The idea of shopping in crowds of people and nerve racking traffic is not my idea of fun. I do most of my shopping at night at grocery stores and department stores that are open late or 24hrs. Call it a mild case of public anxiety. Though I love going to concerts, I dont do pits for this very reason too.
I even prefer to drive at night if I have to drive states away. I didnt plan to get gifts for anyone but my son this year anyway.
The problem I see it causing is it will make the economy worse because no one can afford to shop. Black friday was way worse last year but we still had a bunch of big name stores closing down due to the lack of business. Like Circuit City.
It will be a blow to the already bad economy but in the end I think it will help that people are learning the value of family time, budgets and saving money.
